Here is a throwback to 1962
These documents from November 20, 1962, provide a snapshot of a significant labor dispute involving the Natural Gas Workers Union, Local 555, and the East Ohio Gas Company.
The union accused the company of refusing to return to collective bargaining, ending the check-off of union dues, transferring meter-repair work to Con-Gas, and taking actions the union believed were intended to weaken its membership and bargaining position.
The Executive Committee laid out a firm policy: Local 555 would not agree to another election, would support proceedings before the National Labor Relations Board, and would not recommend a contract unless it provided full retroactive benefits and wage increases dating back to May 31.
The final page called on members to stay united, attend meetings, remain current on dues, and support the union’s efforts to get back to the bargaining table. It also notes support from the International Union and the Cleveland and Ohio AFL-CIO labor movement.
More than 60 years later, these pages document the determination of Local 555 members to stand together, protect their contract, and defend their right to collective bargaining. Let’s honor these Brothers and Sisters this summer with the same energy.
