LAMP LAMP is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to fighting poverty and homelessness. We believe that all persons are created in the image of God.

“LAMP is a caring community of faith providing for the basic needs of homeless and hurting members of our community. We operate on the premise that all of God’s children have the same needs of food, clothing, shelter and love.”

LAMP currently operates an emergency shelter for women & children, families, and men, as well as a transitional housing program and day center for the area's homeless. Residents must commit to bettering themselves by seeking employment or furthering their education. LAMP residents are also required to attend life skills classes such as money management, parenting, resume writing skills, interview skills, and time management. 80% of individuals who complete LAMP's program never need assistance again!

💙 THE HEART BEHIND LAMP | STAFF SPOTLIGHT

Today, we’re proud to shine the spotlight on Janise Davis, Residential Support Specialist, and share why LAMP matters to her.

When asked “Why does LAMP matter to me?”, Janise shared:

“LAMP matters to me for several reasons, but what stands out most is knowing that I am helping people. The beautiful part is realizing that, through helping others, I am being helped too—even when it’s not noticeable.”

Janise’s words are a beautiful reminder that the impact of serving others goes both ways. While we work to bring hope, compassion, and support to individuals experiencing homelessness, we often discover that the experience changes us, too.

Sometimes the greatest rewards of service are not the things we can see or measure, but the personal growth, understanding, and fulfillment that come from making a difference in someone else's life.

As a Residential Support Specialist, Janise plays an important role in supporting our residents and helping create an environment where dignity, kindness, and compassion matter.

Thank you, Janise, for your dedication, your heart for service, and the difference you make in the lives of those we serve. We are grateful to have you as part of the heart behind LAMP. 💙

Streetlight Stories | “I Just Want a Big Bed!”

“I've traveled a lot of places in my life, but my mother's side of the family lived here, and so did she.”

He came to Valdosta for one reason. To take care of his mother while she was sick.

But when his mother passed away, everything changed.

She didn't own anything, and when she was gone, he found himself with nowhere to go.

He tried working. He tried staying from house to house. But he told me how uncomfortable it felt depending on other people for somewhere to sleep.

And eventually, he chose the streets.

Imagine that. You move somewhere to take care of the person who once took care of you, and after losing her, you find yourself homeless.

He told me he tried to keep working, but it became difficult when he didn't have a place to lay his head at night.

Someone eventually told him about the Salvation Army and LAMP.

And that's how his journey with us began.

As he shared his story, he couldn't say enough about the ladies at LAMP who worked with him.

“Those ladies are nothing but angels!”

He talked about how they encouraged him, helped him find a job that he absolutely loves, and worked with him to get back on his feet.

And now?

HE'S MOVING INTO HIS OWN HOME!

Not just somewhere to stay. His very own place.

And y'all, he is excited!

He told me it's a nice place, and he even has a view of a swimming pool!

He said, “I ain't never had that before!”

LAMP has also helped him with furniture and other things he needs to make his new place feel like home.

But then he said something that made me smile.

“Now all I want is a BIG bed so I can roll from one side to the other!” 😂

Y'all, I laughed!

But when I thought about it later, that statement meant so much more than just wanting a big bed.

When you've spent nights on the streets, going from place to place, never knowing where you'll lay your head, having a bed of your own means something different.

A place where nobody is going to ask you to leave.

A place where you can close your door.

A place where you can finally rest.

He came to Valdosta to care for his mother. He lost her and found himself struggling just to survive.

But today, he's working a job he loves, moving into a beautiful home, and looking forward to something many of us take for granted.

A good night's sleep in his own bed.

And I couldn't be happier for him!

To the ladies at LAMP who helped him along the way, thank you. Your work matters, and he wanted everyone to know it.

Sometimes dignity restored looks like having your own keys, a view of a swimming pool, and a bed big enough to roll from one side to the other! 💜

💛 Community in Action! 💛

This young man, Graham, turned his creativity into kindness by making and selling bracelets, raising $400 to help people experiencing homelessness!

With his family’s support, Graham went shopping and used the money to purchase food, bottled water, toilet tissue, and cleaning supplies, which they delivered to LAMP.

Every bracelet he made helped meet a need for someone else. What a beautiful reminder that you are never too young to make a difference!

Graham, we are so proud of you and grateful for your caring heart. Thank you to your family for supporting your efforts and helping you put compassion into action. You are helping us Light the Way Home! 💛

💙 THE HEART BEHIND LAMP | STAFF SPOTLIGHT

Today, we’re proud to highlight Sarai Spencer, Residential Support Specialist, who has been part of the LAMP team since May 5, 2025, and share what makes this work meaningful to her.

When asked what she loves most about her work at LAMP, Sarai shared:

“What I love most about my job is being able to make people feel seen, supported, and cared for during difficult times in their lives. I enjoy building connections with residents and knowing that even small acts of kindness or encouragement can make a difference. This job has also taught me patience, empathy, and how important compassion is.”

Sarai’s words remind us that making a difference doesn’t always require a grand gesture. Sometimes it is simply seeing someone, listening, offering encouragement, and showing them that they matter.

Thank you, Sarai, for the kindness, compassion, and support you bring to our residents and for being part of the heart behind LAMP. 💙

Streetlight Stories | “You Don’t Remember Me, Do You?”

I walked into a store this week, and the lady behind the register looked so familiar. I knew I had seen her somewhere before, but for the life of me, I couldn’t place her.

What really caught my attention was how she was interacting with another customer. She was so friendly, jolly, pleasant and helpful. They were laughing and carrying on like they had known each other forever.

I thought to myself, now that’s somebody who really enjoys what she does.

After I finished looking around, I went to the counter. She greeted me with that same beautiful personality, but this time she spoke to me like she knew me.

Then she said, “You don’t remember me, do you?”

I told her, “You look so familiar, but I just can’t place you.”

She smiled and said, “I looked different back then.”

Then she told me her name.

And just like that, I remembered!

Once I heard her name, I could see who she was. But let me tell you, she looked GOOD! Healthy, happy, with a little happy weight on her. And that smile!

She began telling me how much her life had changed since coming to LAMP.

She said, “I’m still in the same apartment y’all helped me get into. And this is the same job I got when I was at LAMP.”

THREE YEARS!

Three years later, she’s still in her home. Still working the same job. Still taking care of herself. And she told me she couldn’t be happier.

Then she thanked us.

Y’all, that did something to my heart.

Because so often in this work, we see people at some of the lowest points in their lives. We see the tears, the frustration, the setbacks, the struggles and the uncertainty.

We work hard to help them get back on their feet, and then one day they move out, and life goes on.

We don’t always get to see what happens next.

But this week, I did.

I got to see what three years of stability looked like.

I got to see what happens when someone gets an opportunity, takes it and keeps moving forward.

And I got to see a woman who once needed help now standing behind a counter, smiling, laughing and bringing joy to somebody else’s day.

I told her how wonderful she looked and how very proud I was of her.

Before I left, she said, “You can use my story on Facebook.”

I said, “I sure will!”

So here it is.

And when you read this, I want you to know something.

We are SO VERY PROUD OF YOU!

Not just because you have a job or an apartment, but because of everything you’ve accomplished and the life you’ve continued to build for yourself.

Thank you for reminding me why we do what we do.

And thank you for allowing me to share your story.

Sometimes the greatest reward in this work isn’t seeing someone walk through our doors. It’s seeing them three years later, living the life they worked so hard to rebuild.

This is what Dignity Restored looks like.

FACT FRIDAY | DID YOU KNOW?
Finding an apartment and being able to move into one are two different things.
For someone experiencing homelessness, getting the keys may require more than the first month’s rent.
There may also be:
🏠 Security deposits
💡 Utility deposits
📝 Application fees
🚚 Moving expenses
🛏️ Basic household necessities
🚗 Transportation costs
For someone rebuilding their life, one unexpected expense can stand between homelessness and home.
That’s why LAMP’s work doesn’t stop at finding an available unit. We help people navigate the barriers that can make moving into and maintaining permanent housing difficult.
And that’s where community support makes a difference.
Sometimes changing a life looks like a big donation.
Sometimes it looks like helping someone get the lights turned on.
💙 Every gift matters. Every step toward home matters.
Dignity Restored. Hope Renewed.

SOUTH GEORGIA, LET’S STAY WEATHER AWARE!

As we prepare for the possible impacts of Hurricane Isaias, I want to encourage everyone in Valdosta, Lowndes County, and our surrounding communities to stay informed, remain alert, and take the necessary precautions to keep yourselves and your families safe.

Our message is simple: BE PREPARED, NOT SCARED!

Tornado Watch: Lowndes County is under a Tornado Watch until 9:00 PM tonight. This means conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop.

Strong Winds: A Wind Advisory is in effect through 8:00 PM Saturday, with gusts potentially reaching 50 mph. Please secure outdoor items and be mindful of falling limbs and possible power outages.

Heavy Rain & Flooding: A Flood Watch remains in effect through 8:00 PM Saturday. Rainfall of 2–3 inches is expected, with locally higher amounts possible.

LAMP EMERGENCY SHELTER UPDATE

LAMP is continuing to closely monitor weather conditions and the potential impacts on our area.

At this time, we have not received an advisory or request to activate an additional emergency weather shelter.

We remain prepared to respond should conditions change or additional sheltering needs arise. We will keep our community informed of any changes to our emergency shelter operations.

STAY CONNECTED. STAY INFORMED.

Please take a moment to register for Alert Lowndes, a FREE emergency notification service that can provide important weather alerts and emergency information.

https://www.smart911.com/smart911/ref/reg.action?pa=AlertLowndes

LET’S LOOK OUT FOR ONE ANOTHER!

Check on our seniors, neighbors who live alone, families with small children, and those who may need additional assistance.

Remember, a Tornado Watch means BE READY, while a Tornado Warning means TAKE SHELTER IMMEDIATELY.

We don’t want anyone living in fear, but we do want everyone prepared. Weather conditions can change quickly, and being informed can make all the difference.

At LAMP, our commitment to the safety and well-being of our community remains unchanged.

Stay safe, Valdosta and South Georgia. We’re all in this together!

LAMP WEATHER ADVISORY | MONITORING HURRICANE ISAIAS

At LAMP, the safety and well-being of those we serve remain our highest priority.

As Hurricane Isaias approaches the Gulf Coast, we are closely monitoring weather conditions and staying informed of updates from local emergency management officials.

At this time, LAMP has not activated additional emergency sheltering operations in response to the storm. Our existing shelter services will continue under normal operations unless conditions require a change.

Heavy rainfall, localized flooding, and the possibility of isolated tornadoes remain concerns for our area Friday night through Saturday.

We encourage everyone to remain weather-aware, take necessary precautions, and follow guidance from local emergency officials.

LAMP remains committed to serving our community, particularly our most vulnerable neighbors. Should conditions change or additional sheltering needs arise, we will provide updates as appropriate.

Prepared. Alert. Committed to Our Community.
