Blazer Alumni Spotlight: Davis Roche '18

We're proud to spotlight Davis Roche, a 2018 graduate of Valdosta State University, where he earned his degree in Healthcare Administration.

Since graduating, Davis has built an impressive career in healthcare leadership. Now serving as Associate Chief Operating Officer at a Baptist Health hospital in Hoover, he has led major operational improvements and system integration efforts throughout his career. His commitment to leadership, excellence, and service reflects the lasting impact of a VSU education and serves as an inspiration to future Blazers.

We love seeing Blazers leading in healthcare and making an impact in communities across the country. Congratulations, Davis!

What a great night with Blazer Nation!

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Alumni House for another President’s Tailgate before cheering on our Blazers!

And what a way to end the night, another Blazer victory! We loved seeing so many familiar faces, feeling the energy of Blazer Nation and celebrating another win together.

The Blazers are hitting the road for the next few weeks, but we’ll be back home at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium on October 3 for our Breast Cancer Awareness Pink Out Game!

Blazer Maker Monday: James Argo ’00

From Blazer to business owner, James Argo is bringing Southern tradition to tables across the region!

A graduate of VSU’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences, James earned his B.A. in Criminal Justice in 2000. Today, he is the founder of Oconee Gold BBQ Sauce, a small-batch BBQ sauce company inspired by his Carolina roots, family traditions, and love of barbecue.

What started as a homemade sauce served at cookouts and tailgates eventually grew into a business. In 2020, James officially bottled and named his signature sauce, turning a longtime passion into Oconee Gold BBQ Sauce. Since then, the brand has continued to grow, earning recognition for its flavorful sauces, including a 2023 Flavor of Georgia win for its White Gold sauce and a 2025 win for Georgia Sweet Peach.

Today, Oconee Gold offers a variety of award-winning, small-batch sauces and seasonings that showcase James’ passion for great barbecue and Southern flavor.

Blazers Back the Braves!

What a great night at the ballpark! 150 VSU alumni and friends joined us at the Hank Aaron Terrace for a night of baseball, Blazer pride and a Braves win over the Colorado Rockies.

Events like this are a great reminder of how special our alumni community is. It was so good to see Blazers reconnect, catch up with old friends and meet fellow alumni.

Thank you to everyone who came out and made the night such a success. We’re already looking forward to next year, and we’re planning to make Blazers Back the Braves even bigger.

Blazer Alumni Spotlight: Raphael Walters '15, '17

We're proud to spotlight Raphael Walters, a two-time Valdosta State University graduate who is making a lasting impact through leadership, mentorship, and service.

Raphael was recently inducted into the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project, a program dedicated to providing mentorship, guidance, and positive role models for youth throughout the Miami-Dade community. As a newly inducted mentor, he is committed to helping inspire the next generation and creating meaningful opportunities for young people to succeed.

Raphael earned his bachelor's degree in Speech Communication from the College of the Arts in 2015 and his master's degree in Educational Leadership from the Dewar College of Education and Human Services in 2017.

We are proud to see Blazers leading with purpose and making a difference in communities!

What a night we had at the first President’s Tailgate for the 2026 season!

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Alumni House last night for a fantastic evening with Blazer Nation! It was the perfect way to kick off game day and come together before cheering on our Blazers at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.

A huge thank-you to Duggan Dental for sponsoring the President’s Tailgate and helping make the evening possible! We’re so grateful for your support of VSU and Blazer Nation.

And what a way to end the night, our Blazers brought home the win! We loved seeing so many familiar faces, feeling the energy of Blazer Nation, and celebrating together.

Blazer-Owned Business Spotlight

This week we're highlighting Valdosta Pediatric Therapy Services, founded by Valdosta State College alumnus Frank George '85.

After recognizing a need for pediatric therapy services in South Georgia, Frank opened Valdosta Pediatric Therapy Services in 1998 as the city's first pediatric therapy clinic. Today, the practice has expanded to serve families in Valdosta, Tifton, and Thomasville, providing speech and occupational therapy while remaining committed to helping children reach their full potential.

For more than 20 years, VPTS has trained therapy students from Georgia and Florida, including VSU speech-language pathology students.

We’re proud to celebrate Blazer-owned businesses and the impact they make in our community!
