Deep emotional connection and outwardly expressing those feelings! Complex emotions such as this can develop differently with children on the autism spectrum—this was most definitely a meaningful milestone 🩷Uhhh I will never watch the Disney movie Tangled again without crying happy tears! Autism…

Show Me Romey Foundation…

This picture….

After our Facebook live last night I was able to reflect a lot about where SMR has taken me as a mom.

It’s taken me out of a shell..
It’s brought new people into my life..
It’s helped me to feel that I am enough..
My daughter is enough..
Autism doesn’t have to be taboo..
Different is OK..actually more than ok..
I am not alone..
Being kind is free..
Love can have no words..
Acceptance can happen..
Inclusion is a choice..
And..
You can have friendships with moms just like YOU

What I have also learned about Mom’s who have come into this community of SMR…

They feel seen..
They feel heard..
They belong..
They feel they are enough..
They have been able to break the stigma with family..
Talks are happening..
Doors are opening..

Real talk!! Raw talk! I have had moms tell me because of SMR doors are open for them to feel comfortable in their own skin as an autism family. To break stigmas, bust doors wide open and advocate for their children. That SMR helped them to see they were not alone and there is a community for them, for their children. That acceptance can happen and it’s ok to ā€œhave the talk.ā€

It was hard for me to put my family out there when starting Show Me Romey, scared of all the judgment…but God kept pushing and pushing until I finally said ā€œok.ā€ He always sees the bigger picture—and always has.

SMR is a platform for all families-you are welcome here! You are seen, heard and valued! We will continue to advocate for our kids and keep working hard to break the word ā€œAutismā€ out of being so taboo!

SMR has helped change families lives…and when that sinks in..like really sinks—my heart is full. And Not just with the families of children with autism but all the support from those friends and family and even people who want to just join the movement who want to see change, who want to learn and who support us! Thank you 🄹 you help change lives, help transform, help us to simply feel comfortable with ā€œus.ā€ And everyone deserves to be themselves.

One step at a time, one talk at a time, one Facebook live at a time, one post at a time, one smile at a time…closer and closer. 🩷

Today, we had the opportunity to visit Skyline School and speak with the middle school and high school JAG students about the Show Me Romey Autism Awareness Foundation, autism awareness, and what it means to build and run a nonprofit foundation within a community.

The students asked so many thoughtful, important questions, and we loved getting to spend time doing activities and having open conversations with them. Seeing young people genuinely interested in learning, supporting others and getting involved in their community gives us so much hope for the future. šŸ’™

A huge thank you to Mrs. Bybee and Mrs. Bryan for inviting us and making today possible. We are incredibly grateful to be part of such an amazing, supportive community that continues to stand behind our foundation and our mission.

Ok let’s talk about the CONSTANT undercurrent of anxiety that parents with autistic children feel, me included. Facts.

I have had a lot of highs and lows with Romey girl this week. For lots of different reasons…school coming to a close soon, being out of routine and sickness. We all know as ASD parents even one of those can send our child into a tailspin let alone all 3 at once 😳

So…I have been full of anxiety this past week in constant worry of Romey and ā€œundesirableā€ behaviors as a result. We have had a lot of ā€œtalksā€ this past week and extra prayers.

We as ASD parents spend our days not only being our child’s interpreter, advocate, comforter and of course their safe place. So when I realized Romey had a field trip this same week with all the ā€œextrasā€ already going on I added another worry to this mom’s plate. It happened to land on the same day I had to work and send her on the field trip without her safe person. (Momma)

With all this being said…..Romey was an absolute ā€œangelā€ on the trip! She had the very best time with her peers, followed the rules and showed nothing but pure happiness with each one of her pictures that I received 🩷

To say I was relieved is an understatement. Not only relieved but PROUD. This got me thinking that maybe Romey is capable of more independence than ā€œmy own fearā€ realizes? šŸ¤”

That happiness hits differently for autism parents. Because behind that successful field trip are YEARS of worry, sleepless nights, sensory planning, and protecting your child from a world that doesn’t always understand them.

Those closest to me know how much we needed this win this week, Small wins are BIG wins in our world.

Have a wonderful and beautiful weekend friends! And if you ever wondered if you can’t do this or if it’s too much, remember YOU CAN and YOU ARE ā¤ļø
