Community Alert: Major upgrades being proposed to local transmission lines.

BGE has applied for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity for its Maryland Line to High Ridge new 500 kV transmission line. This will be built in an existing BGE right-of-way. The project includes rebuilding an existing 500 kV line and an existing 230 kV line.

The entire project spans 59 miles. To see details of this project, including an interactive map, visit https://goodenergyinprogress.com/project/tri-county-transmission-upgrade-project/maryland-line-highridge/ . The existing right-of-way cuts through VPC territory, crossing Mt. Carmel Road near Cedar Grove Road, Yeoho, Benson Mill, Falls, Black Rock, Dover, Piney Grove, and Longnecker Roads, on its way to Rte. 30 and points west of 795.

The deadline to become an intervenor in the Maryland Line to High Ridge project is 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟯. If you are at all concerned that new structures that are much larger than existing ones will be erected, that new access roads may be needed, or that the equivalent of a new energy highway will be constructed, and your property adjoins the existing right-of-way, please consider becoming an intervenor in Case 9884 at the Public Service Commission. More information is available athttps://psc.maryland.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/CPCN-Participation-Fact-Sheet_Dec2024.pdf .

Meanwhile, Wednesday night BGE held a virtual informational meeting about what it’s calling the Lieb Road Transmission Upgrade Project, part of a group of projects collectively called the “Tri-County Transmission Upgrade Project Bundle” (this includes the Maryland Line to High Ridge project).

The Lieb Road project is just 1.6 miles, but it includes the installation of a new 500 kV transmission line “to maintain the stability of the transmission grid”, i.e., connect the MPRP to energy coming from Pennsylvania on its way to Maryland.

The presentation was remarkably uninformative. No new information was presented. We had unanswered questions about the existing right-of-way the line is being built on, access roads, what will happen if landowners refuse access across their properties, and who will pay for the project if the MPRP is never built. BGE is projecting that construction will be completed in June 2027. You can see more information about the Lieb Road project at https://goodenergyinprogress.com/project/tri-county-transmission-upgrade-project/lieb-road/ .
