π¨ PIXEL UPDATE β PLEASE READ & SHARE π¨
At 3 AM, a hospital in Gainesville put dog blood into our cat because there wasn't a drop of cat blood in Florida she could take.
πΎ Pixel is 6.8 pounds. She came to us with congenital deformities β a wrist that never formed right, a leg we were told might need to come off. She kept it. She's two years old.
Five days ago her belly started filling with fluid. Her vet drained 400 mL out of a six-pound cat. Her bloodwork came back with a platelet count of 14,000 β normal starts at 125,000. She was bruising where they shaved her leg just to draw blood. Her red cell count was a third of what it should be.
π₯ We got her to the University of Florida Small Animal Hospital at 830 PM Friday night.
At 3 AM they told us Pixel has a rare blood type β Type B β and there was no feline blood available anywhere in the region. Type A blood would have killed her. The only option left was a canine transfusion.
πβ‘οΈπ± Dog blood. Into a cat. Which her own body will destroy within three to five days.
A bridge. Just enough time for her treatment to start working.
We said yes.
She made it through the night. π
β
She's on GS-441524 β the antiviral that turned FIP from a death sentence into a treatable disease
β
IV doxycycline for a suspected co-infection called Mycoplasma β a blood parasite that's treatable if that's part of what's attacking her
β
A clinical pathologist reviewing her fluid samples right now
β
Round the clock critical care at UF
One thing working in her favor: if Mycoplasma is confirmed, one of her enemies has a known weakness and we're already hitting it.
πΈ Here's where we are financially:
We walked into UF with $3,000 β $1,500 on a CareCredit account approved in a parking lot at midnight, and $1,500 from one sponsor who answered her phone. ICU care and the transfusion will take most of it. The 84-day antiviral that actually cures FIP is on top of that β and it can't pause.
Here's what your donation does:
π $25 β one day of her antiviral
π $75 β three days
π $150 β a recheck panel to see if she's turning the corner
π $500 β a week of hospitalization
π $2,000 β the full 84 days that ends this
Purradise Springs is 180+ cats on nine acres. Neither of us takes a salary. Most of our residents arrived the way Pixel did β somebody decided they weren't worth the trouble.
She's spent nine days fighting on a third of the blood she needs.
She's still here. Help us keep her that way. πΎ
