📚 On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, bringing news of freedom to enslaved people - two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This moment marked the effective end of slavery in Texas, and Black Texans began commemorating the anniversary as Juneteenth. Over time, these celebrations spread across the country, becoming a symbol of Black resilience, liberation, and community.
