Project Guardianship Project Guardianship provides person-centered care for older adults who need help making decisions.

We also transform the systems that support them to ensure safety, promote independence, preserve dignity, and advance racial and social justice. Today, Project Guardianship testified before the New York City Council Committees on Aging, Disabilities, and Finance in support of Intros 978-A and 1010, which would raise income thresholds for SCRIE, DRIE, SCHE, and DHE, as well as Resolution 431 to expand housing options for older adults and people experiencing homelessness.

Project Guardianship emphasized how rigid benefit thresholds can jeopardize housing stability for people with hashtag and older adults, particularly when small Social Security or SSI increases push them over eligibility limits. PG also highlighted the importance of expanding affordable housing options so hashtag can help clients remain safely housed in their communities and in the least restrictive setting possible.

In a new op-ed for City Limits, Kimberly George, President and CEO of Project Guardianship, examines the devastating impact deed theft can have on older homeowners and makes the case for stronger protections before a crisis occurs.

She highlights how fraud and financial exploitation can lead to displacement, housing instability, and the loss of independence—and argues that prevention must go beyond prosecution. Community support, accessible legal and financial assistance, thoughtful planning, and carefully tailored interventions all have a role to play.

“If we wait until an older adult’s home has been stolen to ask how they should be protected, we have already waited too long.”

A timely reminder that protecting older adults means building systems that prevent exploitation—not simply responding after the damage is done.

The Guardianship Access New York (GANY) coalition is working to address a growing crisis: New Yorkers in need of a legal guardian who have no family or friends to serve and no ability to pay for private care. A $15 million annual investment would build the capacity needed to ensure access to high-quality guardianship services statewide. It’s time for New York to act.
