Call Directions

Firefighters Labor Union Hense, the North Hudson Firefighters Association was established.

In 1999 when five municipalities consisting of Guttenberg, North Bergen, Weehawken, West New York and Union City unilaterally decided to merge their individual fire departments into a single department under the newly created North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue, they disrupted long term collective bargaining groups and firefighter international and fraternal organizations. In direct response to this, the firefighter organizations of West New York/Guttenberg IAFF local 620, Weehawken FMBA local 26, Union City FMBA local 12 and North Bergen IAFF local 1387 formed a singular organization to protect its members from any forms of injustice; to secure just compensation for their services and equitable settlement of their grievances; to promote the establishment of just and reasonable working conditions and strive constantly for their improvement; to improve the efficiency of its members; and to cultivate friendship and fellowship among its members.

Today at North Hudson Regional Fire & Rescue Headquarters, we came together to dedicate a new memorial honoring the firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Funded by the North Hudson Fire Unions, this monument honors all Line of Duty Deaths from the former Fire Departments of Guttenberg, North Bergen, Union City, Weehawken, and West New York, as well as North Hudson Regional Fire & Rescue, which was formed following the consolidation of the five departments.

Though the names on this memorial span different departments and generations, they are forever connected by the same calling: service to their communities and sacrifice in the line of duty.

A special thank you to all of our members who attended today’s ceremony, our area Police Departments, the Jersey City Gong Club, and everyone who joined us in paying tribute to our fallen brothers.

This memorial will stand as a permanent reminder that their service, courage, and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Today, the North Hudson Firefighters Union remembers Firefighter Vincent Neglia, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty 20 years ago today.

Two decades have passed, but time has not diminished the memory of Brother Neglia, the impact he made on those around him, or the sacrifice he made protecting the people of our community.

His brothers and sisters continue to carry his memory, honor his service, and remember the firefighter and the man he was.

Brother Neglia had a favorite line that those who knew him will never forget: “SMARTEN UP.”

Twenty years later, those words still echo through the department.

Continue to rest easy Brother. We hope we’re making you proud.

Today is a heavy day.

A United States veteran, a firefighter, and a man who spent his life serving others, is gone.

Sometimes people carry pain that no one can see. A uniform can make someone look strong, but it does not mean they are not hurting. It does not mean they do not need someone to check on them.

To every firefighter, veteran, first responder, and anyone fighting something in silence: you are not weak for speaking up. You are not a burden. You are not alone.

We spend so much of our lives showing up for other people. Sometimes, we have to let someone show up for us.

Check on your people. Call them. Sit with them. Ask twice. Listen. Be present.

And if you are hurting, please reach out. To a friend. To family. To someone in your firehouse. To someone who will stay with you through the moment.

Your life matters. Your story matters. The people who love you need you here.

Rest easy, brother. Your service mattered. Your life mattered. You mattered.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988.
