This morning, Three Rivers Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire in the 100 block of Portage Avenue, along with our auto aid partners from Fabius-Park Fire Department and Centreville Fire Department.

Crews arrived to find smoke and fire showing from a second-floor window. Firefighters quickly deployed an attack line and were able to bring the fire under control, containing it to the room of origin.

Thankfully, all residents were able to evacuate safely, and no injuries were reported.

This incident serves as an important reminder of the value of working smoke detectors. The home's smoke alarms alerted the family to the fire, giving them the critical time needed to escape safely.

We would like to thank our auto aid partners for their assistance and teamwork on this incident.

Just after midnight, A-Shift crews responded to a fatal motor vehicle accident involving entrapment alongside Fabius Park Fire Department.

Upon arrival, responders located three occupants involved in the crash. Despite lifesaving efforts, two individuals were pronounced deceased at the scene. The third occupant was extricated using hydraulic rescue tools and transported by helicopter to a regional trauma center for advanced medical care.

Incidents of this magnitude require seamless coordination and professionalism. The strong working relationship between our department and Station 3: Fabius-Park Townships Fire Department was critical in providing an effective response under extremely challenging circumstances.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to St. Joseph County 911 for their assistance and coordination during this incident.

Our thoughts are with the families and all those affected by this tragic event.

We say goodbye to two valued members of TRFD as they step away from the fire service. Their dedication, loyalty, and impact on the department and everyone they’ve worked with will not be forgotten.

A huge thank you to Captain Nick Abbate for his 15 years of loyal and dedicated service with TRFD. Nick has been a cornerstone of our department, making a lasting impact on the organization and everyone he has worked with. Today is his last shift, and we are so grateful for his leadership, commitment, and passion for service.

We also want to recognize Firefighter Travis McGahan for his 11 years of loyal and dedicated service with TRFD. Travis recently worked his last shift. During his time, he made a positive impact on the department and all the people he worked alongside. His hard work and friendship have meant so much.

We thank them both for their service, wish them the very best in their future endeavors, and want them to know they will both be greatly missed!
