There’s lots going on this weekend and Emme wants to make sure the most important tasks aren’t forgotten. Have you given your furry friend their heartworm preventative?

Emme has been adjusting well in her foster home and is ready to look for her forever home. Is it with you?

Emme is “pretty much perfect” according to her foster mom:

Sadly, Emme tested Heartworm positive and will go through treatment once she has completed pre-treatment. She is available to meet possible furever families now and her furever family can foster her through treatment. Wescue will cover the cost of her heartworm treatment at one of our vet partners. Erling got his Halloween costume a little early this year because he's currently undergoing heartworm treatment and won't be able to go trick-or-treating. Even so, this sweet boy has an important message to share!

He knows Halloween can be a stressful and sometimes scary time for our furry friends. With a steady stream of strangers at the door, unfamiliar costumes, and all the excitement of the evening, it's a good idea to have a plan in place to keep your pets safe and comfortable. Erling would like to share these Halloween safety tips: 🎃🐾🧡

🎃Keep candy out of reach. Remember that chocolate, raisins and xylitol are toxic to dogs!

🎃Choose pet-safe costumes and don’t impair their vision. (Erling’s disguise is made of pet-safe paint applied by a professional groomer🐯.)

🎃Provide a quiet, safe space for dogs and cats to stay away from trick-or-treaters and prevent possible escapes.

🎃Be careful with decorations so that pets and wildlife don’t get caught up in them.

🎃Offer pet-friendly treats if you get four-legged trick-or-treaters.

🎃Watch for signs of stress.

🎃Know who to call in case of emergency.

October 27 is recognized as 𝘋𝘪́𝘢 𝘥𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘴 𝘔𝘶𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘰𝘴 𝘥𝘦 𝘭𝘢𝘴 𝘔𝘢𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘵𝘢𝘴 (Day of the Dead for Pets), a heartfelt day of remembrance dedicated to the cherished pets who have touched our lives and left paw prints on our hearts.

Today, we honor Robinson, a very special foster boy whom we lost far too soon to stomach cancer while he was still waiting for his forever home. Determined that he would not leave this world without a family of his own, his foster mom adopted him at the veterinary clinic before saying her final goodbye.

Whether they are with us for years or only a short time, our pets leave an immeasurable impact on our lives. Today, we remember Robinson and all the beloved companions who have gone before us.

Sometimes we get so busy rescuing that we forget to introduce those we rescue! Like little Fajita Jack, here.

Jack came to us when his owner was moved from assisted living into memory care. This precious 14 year old was used to being with his owner and providing comfort, then suddenly he found himself among strangers. Do you think that upset him? Not Jack. He took it all in stride and has been friendly with everyone he meets.

We are grateful for Jack’s foster pawrents who immediately said yes when asked if they had room for him. He will be getting a much needed dental tomorrow, along with having some lipomas removed, and then will go back to his foster home to recuperate.

Please keep Jack and his foster pawrents in your thoughts and prayers as he undergoes these necessary procedures. Once cleared, Jack will decide on his furever home so he can enjoy his retirement years❤️

When we know of a Westie or Scottie or Cairn who needs rescue, we make room. After all, that is our mission. So we didn’t waste time when someone asked if we had room for two Scotties, and we are glad for that.

Louis and Chanel came from an owner who loved them but was very ill for a very long time, and their appearance showed it. Their hair was long and matted and their nails, well, we don’t want to think about them. Our gracious groomer spent all day, well into the wee hours of the night shaving and bathing these babies just to get them comfortable.

Louis, the wheaten male, is 6 years old and his sister, Chanel, is 4. They are bonded and like to cuddle with each other and with their humans. We are taking care of their medical needs while we get to know them so they will be ready for a new start.

You may have heard about the three dozen dogs dumped one night this week in a Houston neighborhood. Volunteers and animal control scrambled to get them all safe. Now they are in the city shelter awaiting release from investigations and medical evaluations and folks are lining up to adopt and rescue them.

What about the other shelter dogs? We can’t forget about them. All area shelters are bursting at the seams.

That’s why today we squeezed over and made room for two frightened terriers from the county shelter. These youngsters don’t know yet that today is the start of a whole new life. So new, they don’t even have names yet. Names and medical evaluations coming soon!

Meet Maya!

Sweet Maya came to Wescue after her owner could no longer care for her. She can be a little timid at first but after a little time, you will have a new best friend. Maya came from a home with other dogs and needs another dog in her furever home. Is it with you? Apply online at WSRH.com

Maya is estimated to be around 4 years old and weighs about 16 lbs. She is house trained with a doggy door and is crate trained. She is learning the leash and walks with more confidence with another furry friend along for now.

It’s time for a Porter update! You met this little fellow when he came to Wescue but now he has had a chance to settle in, get all his vet care done, and let us get to know him.

Porter is a 3 year old male Silky Terrier type. He weighs about 11-12 lbs and is a sweet, playful boy who loves everyone! His foster mom says he is the best couch snuggler and loves to be close to his person. Porter gets along well with his foster dog siblings so would do fine in a home with other dogs, but does not need them. His foster home does not have cats but he met some at the vet and was rather indifferent.

His foster mom also says Porter is a great leash walker - and he loves walks! He will sit for treats and food, and is doing pretty well on his housetraining. Porter is a fun little guy to have around and will continue to thrive with basic obedience and structure.
