Today, we honor and commemorate the end of slavery in the United States.
As we reflect on our nation's history, we also recognize the importance of continuing to build communities where equity, dignity, belonging, and opportunity are accessible to all.

In celebration of Foster Care Month in May, MercyFirst partnered with Mindi Cooke, SVP of Business Development at Reunitus, who coordinated the Suitcase Art with Heart initiative. This national foster care awareness campaign aims to replace the trash bags that many youth in foster care use to transport their belongings with hand-painted suitcases that promote dignity, belonging, and self-worth. The suitcases serve as a reminder to youth that "You matter. You belong. You are not disposable."

The project brings together professional illustrators, art students, and community members to create painted suitcases that are then donated directly to youth in foster care. Reunitus donated 50 beautifully, designed suitcase to MercyFirst. Each donated suitcase includes a copy of Tuesday's Bear and a plush bear to provide additional comfort and support.

MercyFirst youth attended a recreational trip to the Arte Museum in Chelsea Piers where they explored hands-on, interactive exhibits that blend art, nature, and technology. Afterward, they walked the NYC High Line, a once abandoned rail-line that was reimagined and given a new purpose as a space for people to visit and share. Youth observed views of NYC architecture and explored how nature and urban design can come together to create a vibrant community setting.

Thank you to Dr. Dawn Besemer who presented to more than 75 MercyFirst Long Island Residential Care staff on the important topic of suicidality and self harm, with a focus on assessment and response strategies.

The training provided staff with valuable tools and insights to help support youth in crisis and strengthen trauma informed care across our residential programs.
