During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we are reminded that childhood cancer affects so much more than a child’s health. It can interrupt birthdays, school days, celebrations, time with friends, and so many of the ordinary moments that make childhood special.

That is why moments of joy matter so much.

Recently, we had the privilege of granting a special summer/birthday wish for Skye Jae. For a little while, the focus was not on treatments, appointments, or hospital visits. It was simply on her, her birthday, her excitement, and the happiness of feeling celebrated.

There is something incredibly meaningful about giving a child facing cancer a special wish. It may seem like a gift, but what it really says is:

“Today is about you. You are special. You are loved. And there are people cheering you on.”

Childhood cancer can take away far too many ordinary childhood experiences. Through programs like our Small Wishes Program, we hope to give some of those moments back, creating bright spots, happy memories, and opportunities for children to simply be children.

During CCAM, we share Skye Jae’s beautiful smile as a reminder of why this mission matters.

Because awareness is important, but so is making sure children and families facing childhood cancer feel supported, remembered, and surrounded by love throughout their journey.

As children everywhere head back to school, there is so much excitement in the air: new teachers, new classrooms, new supplies, and brand-new backpacks.

But this back-to-school season, we also remember the children whose first days may look very different.

Some children are beginning the school year from a hospital room. Some are missing days of school because of treatments, appointments, or procedures. Some are balancing being a student with something no child should ever have to face.

At the Michael Magro Foundation, these are the children and families who are always on our minds.

That is also what made this year’s Back-to-School Backpack Drive so meaningful.

Because of the incredible generosity of our supporters, we were able to provide new backpacks and school supplies to children undergoing treatment and their siblings, helping them begin the school year feeling prepared, included, and cared for.

And now, as some of those children head off to school wearing the backpacks you helped provide, we hope you remember just how much your generosity can mean.

A backpack may seem like something small.

But to a child, it can bring excitement, confidence, normalcy, and the feeling that someone is thinking about them.

To every child heading back to the classroom, we wish you a wonderful school year.

And to every child whose school year is beginning alongside treatment, we are thinking of you, cheering you on, and standing beside your family every step of the way. 🧡

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. 💛

In 2026, an estimated 9,680 children in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer.

9,680 children.

9,680 families whose worlds will suddenly look different.

Behind every diagnosis is a child who should be worrying about school, birthday parties, sports, playdates and what they want to be when they grow up, not treatments, hospital stays, medications and scans.

And behind every child is a family trying to hold everything together.

At the Michael Magro Foundation, we see the impact childhood cancer has on the entire family. The parents carrying fear they never imagined. The siblings whose lives change, too. The everyday expenses and responsibilities that do not stop simply because a child is sick.

That is why our mission has always been about more than a diagnosis.

It is about showing families they are not alone.

It is about easing a burden when we can, creating a moment of joy when it is needed most, and standing beside families during some of the hardest days of their lives.

This month is for the children fighting today, for the survivors, for the families forever changed, and for the children whose lives were far too short.

Because childhood cancer is more than a statistic.
Every number is someone’s child. 💛

Summer may be winding down, but at the Michael Magro Foundation, the need to support families never follows a season.

From creating joyful memories to helping with everyday needs, providing school supplies, fulfilling Small Wishes, and simply being there when a family needs someone... our work continues every day of the year.

As we close out August and look toward September, we are reminded how grateful we are for the community that allows us to keep showing up for local families. 🧡

As parents, so much of our attention goes toward our children.

We schedule their annual physicals. We make the specialist appointments. We notice when something doesn’t seem right. And when our child is facing a serious illness, caring for their health can understandably become the center of our world.

But today, it's National Got Checked Day, and we want to remind parents and caregivers of something equally important:

Your health matters, too!

Getting checked doesn’t only apply to our children. Keeping up with your own physicals, screenings, bloodwork, and recommended health appointments is one of the ways you take care of the people who depend on you.

We have seen firsthand how quickly a diagnosis can change life for an entire family. Early detection and paying attention to your health matter.

So if there is an appointment you’ve been meaning to make, a screening you’ve been putting off, or something you’ve been telling yourself you’ll get checked “eventually,” consider this your reminder.

Take care of yourself, too, because your kids need you. 💛

When we talk about our Back-to-School Program, it’s easy to picture a child receiving a brand-new backpack filled with school supplies.

But there is a story behind every backpack.

Our social workers know the families we support. They know when a child is going through treatment, and they know about the brothers and sisters who are going through it alongside them.

So when a family needs help getting ready for school, we don’t ask, “Which child is receiving treatment?”

We ask, “How many children are in the family?”

Because if a family needs three backpacks, we provide three backpacks.

Each child gets their own backpack.
Their own supplies.
Their own chance to walk into school feeling prepared and excited for a new year.

No child is left out.

Imagine being the sibling who isn’t in treatment, watching your brother or sister receive so much attention because of their illness, and quietly wondering why you don’t get something special, too.

A backpack may seem like a simple gift.

But to a child, it can say:

“You matter, too.”

That is what we want every child in an MMF family to know.

And behind every backpack is a donor, volunteer, social worker, and community member who helped make that moment possible.

So when you see a child carrying a backpack to school this year, remember—it may be carrying more than notebooks and crayons.

It may also be carrying a little bit of hope, a little bit of normalcy, and the reminder that they matter, too. 🧡
