Fall School 2026 - Class Spotlight

Class 1: Fire Fighter Survival/Rapid Intervention Techniques (24 Student Maximum) Class Location: Elba Twp FD Station 1 – 1789 Hadley Rd, Lapeer MI 48446 FIREFIGHTER CE’S AVAILABLE (Turnouts are required with functioning SCBA) (THIS IS A PHYSICALLY DEMANDING CLASS.) Instructor: Brent Connell (Past President MSFA, Elba Twp Fire & Rescue/Grand Blanc Twp FD), Jeff Tody (Elba Twp Fire & Rescue), Alex Newton (Grand Blanc Twp FD), Randy Conkin (Mayville FD)

In this 2-day course students will learn the hands-on techniques needed to survive when something goes wrong. Firefighters will learn to recognize situations where firefighters can become trapped and disoriented and will learn the proper techniques for self-rescue. Firefighters will also learn life saving techniques that can be used in the event that a rapid intervention team is needed. Students will learn how to search, find, and remove firefighters from life threatening incidents.

Class 2: Fireworks in Michigan (Day 1)/Extrication (Day 2) – 830 Davis Lake Rd, Lapeer MI (Lapeer County Firefighters Training Center)

Day 1: Fireworks in Michigan – Instructor: Mick Dingman, Bureau of Fire Services – Fireworks Enforcement Unit
This session provides an overview of consumer and commercial fireworks, including how they are classified and regulated. Participants will learn about the responsibilities and authority of the State Fire Marshal’s Office in licensing, inspections, enforcement, and safety oversight. The course will help understand the fireworks industry, common compliance issues, and their role in ensuring public safety during the sale, storage, and use of fireworks.

Day 2: Extrication – Instructor: Scott McCloud (MacQueen Emergency Rescue specialist) – Topics to be covered during this training session: pre-arrival information, supplemental restraint systems, EV considerations, modern vehicle construction, vehicle preparation, basic and advanced stabilization, multiple techniques for side opening/removal, roof displacement, dash displacement.

Class 3: Youth Firesetting Intervention Specialist – NFA Class – 3565 Genesee Road, Lapeer MI (LCEMS) - Instructor: Karla Klas BS, RN, CCRP – National Fire Academy

****Students must register by September 10, 2026. There must be at least 20 students or the class will be cancelled by the National Fire Academy.

"Youth Firesetting Intervention Specialist" is a 2-day course based on the requirements of National Fire Protection Association 1035, Standard on Fire and Life Safety Educator, Public Information Officer, Youth Firesetting Intervention Specialist and Youth Firesetting Program Manager Professional Qualifications pertaining to the youth firesetting intervention specialist.

This course focuses on how identification, intake, screening, disposition and follow-up are used to mitigate youth firesetting behavior. Course content includes understanding the motivations behind youth firesetting and how the impact of adverse childhood experiences and behavioral/mental health changes can influence firesetting behaviors. This course is for the practitioner who provides services at the program delivery level.
