The Gatherings

The Gatherings A Community Center in Surry with a mission to foster community through sharing, cooperation, learning and the arts.

We offer a spacious, flexible, convenient and affordable space to gather together, host events, groups, parties and weddings. The Gatherings is a place to bring community together! In May 2016, the Gatherings opened in a building across the street from the Surry post office with a large room downstairs set up with movable furniture to create a large meeting room, small performance venue or party r

oom. The kitchen area allows people to host meals or get together with neighbors for a cup of tea and a game of scrabble, cribbage or what ever strikes your fancy. A small library has created the book nook between the café /kitchen and large room. Thanks to a generous donation from then the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation, the renovations to the second floor were complete in 2017. This expanded space allows us to better cater to the younger members of our community, with space for activities such as crafts, Legos, board games and a Foosball table. Having this safe place near the main rooms makes it possible for more parents to participate in community activities without the worry of childcare. The other room on the second floor has been left as an open area for art, exercise/yoga classes, private meeting space and more! The large lawn is perfect for outdoor games and celebrations. Eventually, it includes a small community garden and orchard that could be expanded, and a playground may be added too. We have support from the town selectmen, town committees, local businesses and other nonprofits in the area. More than 200 donors and volunteers have gotten us this far, and we hope that others can help move us into the future.

Shape Note Singing is on Sunday Sept. 6th at 1pm!

Shape note singing is a system originally devised to teach sight-reading and singing in harmony to folks with no musical background. From its beginnings in colonial America, it now has an international following. Non-performance singing, in four parts, for the joy of the activity alone is a beautiful example of community-based art. No experience or talent is required. We sing for one another; everyone is welcome. Our afternoon of Shape-note singing would include a brief history and description of the music and then simply singing from The Sacred Harp, the tune book most commonly used for this. We will bring loaner books.

Cost: $2/person

The season is winding down but you can still find the Magic Food Bus at The Gatherings on Thursdays at 2:30pm!

Healthy Peninsula’s Magic Food Bus is a seasonal traveling farm stand and mobile library that delivers free, fresh, local produce, books, and information about food security resources every week to every town on the Blue Hill Peninsula, Deer Isle, and Stonington.

The Magic Food Bus rolls from late June through the end of September and is free to everyone!Staffed primarily by volunteers, the Magic Food Bus has grown over the years in size, reach, and complementary activities. Originally conceived as a book mobile, the metaphorical ‘bus’ (really a cadre of volunteer vehicles), now serves up thousands of pounds of free, fresh vegetables to hundreds of people every growing season.

While fresh produce is the main course, books remain on the menu—the Friends of the Blue Hill Public Library, as well as other community donors, offer free, interesting, fun, and informative summer reading material to Bus patrons of all ages.

Lena is back for a Mushroom Identification Workshop, this Saturday August 29th at 9am 🍄

Discover the fundamentals of mushroom identification in this hands-on, beginner friendly workshop. Together, we'll learn to recognize the key characteristics that distinguish different species and begin feeling comfortable with field guides, foraging tools and other available resources.

We'll explore common edible mushrooms found in our region and discuss important poisonous look-alikes, while learning safe identification practices. We'll also focus on tree identification and the relationships between trees and Fungi, helping you understand where and when to forage.

Whether you're completely new to mushroom foraging or have years of experience, all skill levels are welcome. Everyone brings unique observations and knowledge, and we often learn as much from each other as we do the forest itself.

This workshop emphasizes ethical harvesting practices, respect for the environment, and safe mushroom identification.
