The By Name Project

The By Name Project The By Name Project is a registered 501(C)3 non-profit organization that has been serving the Sumter community since 2016. Our faithful God did just that.

The vision of The By Name Project was realized in later part of 2016, when President, and founder Jeff Wright, began to obediently surrender to the Lord's calling for him in ministry on the streets of Sumter here in South Carolina. Initially, this ministry began by approaching individuals in the community who simply looked hungry and lost. One by one, their immediate need was being met, and the op

portunity was being seized to show the love of Jesus through action. Over the course of the next few weeks, Jeff began to call on our Lord to send him help if it be His will. One by one, people who had been praying for clarity on the recent callings they had felt were divinely directed to The By Name Project which, over the years have consisted of various staff members and a multitude of loving volunteers. Within the next couple of months of those initial callings The By Name Project became a 501(c)3, Non-Profit organization and continued to let the Spirit of Jesus Christ lead the way. As an organization, we began to meet and minister at a local park in town across the street from Burger King on the Corner of Lafayette and Calhoun St. in Sumter. Since then, TBNP has continued to (via donations) provide delicious food, and new to gently used clothing for our friends at the park on the first and third Saturday every month. We currently meet on those Saturdays at 305 Di**le St., also in Sumter. With the grace of God, and your helping hand, we can continue to serve and love our neighbors “by name” through addressing immediate needs and cultivating life changing relationships. If you are interested in coming out and getting involved, if you would just like more information on our organization, or maybe even make a donation, click on the contact us link above. And please feel free to like and share our page. God Bless you all!

We had a fantastic day out in the community on Saturday, May 16 (our 3rd Saturday event). We meet and serve every 1st and 3rd Saturday each month. We were joined by a Girl Scout troop 2243 from Liberty STEAM Charter: A School of Inquiry, Innovation, & Impact. They furnished the meal and as part of a badge requirement they handed out high visibility vests along with laminated cards with Bicycle and Walking Safety Tips.
We also were able to hand out bags of leftover pizza and hot dogs from an event held for the Joy Prom. We collab with lots of other nonprofits when we can and this was one of those times.
We use and distribute what we get all the time. And right now as hot weather approaches, we need travel sized deodorants, new men’s and women’s underwear. Small things of sunscreen also would not be amiss. We love our friends and want them to be comfortable and safe.
Since May has 5 Saturdays, we will not see our friends for three weeks. But we always keep them in our prayers and we check on them from time to time during the week. Have a great holiday weekend coming up! Stay safe and come join us the first Saturday of June.

We are so honored to be voted Nonprofit of the Year by the Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce! They gave us a beautiful glass trophy and it’s so heavy! (Now if we only had an office we could show it off in! 😂)
Cheryl and Renee will share custody of it for now.
It was a great reception and we got to meet some wonderful community leaders.
We had our Hype Man there introducing us around. Trevor T. Ivey thanks for being such a great supporter and friend. We love our Liberty STEAM Charter: A School of Inquiry, Innovation, & Impact friends who are now family!
As we start our 10 year anniversary, we can’t wait to see what this next year brings!
We couldn’t do what we do without support and volunteers (and we love our volunteers! They are The Best!)

There’s just something about some bunny ears that make everybody happy! (Or hoppy!)lol
We had a wonderful day celebrating Easter with our friends. We had some tunes, some pizza and a whole lot of fun.
Renee brought her Facepainting kit and painted the ‘big kids’ because no littles joined us this time. Cheryl brought paper Easter tablecloths for coloring and crayons that were also enjoyed by the big kids!
We have such a good time with our friends in the community. If you would like to come join the fun, we will be back out to the parking lot on Magnolia Street next to the DHEC building which is across the street from the Lafayette Street Piggly Wiggly. Just look for our trailer and a bunch of blue shirts! We will be there from 10-12, April 18!

We had such a great day today! So many friends coming together to share a meal, play some Uno and get some supplies if needed. We love our volunteers and especially the ones who used to just be served.
When we once served someone and then they begin serving, it really makes us all feel like what we do matters. Community is everything.
We want to know all of our friends ‘By Name’. Our next event will be April 4 at 10:00am. Come join us for a good time.

This is what community looks like! We love our Liberty STEAM Charter: A School of Inquiry, Innovation, & Impact family! Because we are all family.
We have always said at TBNP that a measure of our success will be when those we serve start serving others. It’s starting to happen. We have several friends whom we have served over the years who are now showing up early to help us set up and to serve others. We are truly blessed and making a difference. Please go serve others. We all need it right now.

Hello friends! Please be aware that January has 5 Saturdays. So we will not be out in the community this week. We only serve on the first and third Saturdays. Our next event is February 7. Please stay warm and safe and we will see you soon.

When donating clothes to The By Name Project, please make sure they are clean and in working order. No rips or pit stains. Zippers must work.

Why? Why do we want clean clothes for someone who may be wearing them on the street?

Read that question back to yourself and you may find the answer.

If not, let me spell it out for you. If someone is going to have to wear an item around until they 1) have the opportunity to wash it or, 2) find another one or, 3) throw it away because it reeks, it should start out in the best possible condition.

We do not keep items that we, ourselves would not wear. We donate them to Salvation Army, who can try to sell them if someone wants to buy a pit stained tshirt. But we will not give one to our friends at the park. Because we are friends.

I know your heart is in the right place wanting to give someone something but please use your head too.

We want to give our friends dignity and respect, not a handout.

Love you all. Keep up the good fight.

I remembered to snap a few pics while I was on the food line today.
What a dreary, wet day to be out volunteering. But out we were!

Because we have the choice to be out while some do not.
We serve every first and third Saturday, RAIN OR SHINE!
We only served about 25 folks today which is low. But those few got loaded up with meals.

Our volunteers are the best. We had brisket donated and Josh made smoked chicken bbq sandwiches and Kay made some wicked good baked beans and made/brought so many great desserts. We had fruit and chips to go with each plate.

We also handed out the leftover Christmas candy bags to everyone there. I got to eat and chat with some of our friends that are like family. So while the weather was dreary, the spirits were light!

As we welcome in the new year, let’s all take a moment to be thankful for all the things we take for granted. And hug the family and friends you surround yourself with. May this year be your best one yet!

Share love, spread joy, be kind.

If you’d like to join us as we love on our community, we have several ways to get involved.

-Donate
—money, time or clothing

-Prepare/provide a meal

-Come serve with us. You won’t leave unchanged.

Or do all three!! Send us a message and we will give you all the info.

Happy New Year!!
-Renee
