Mamakating Historical Society

Mamakating Historical Society Preserving history and building community in the town of Mamakating, Sullivan County, NY.

Founded in 2001, the Mamakating Historical Society seeks to collect and preserve history of the Town of Mamakating, Sullivan County, NY. This mission is achieved through an approach of maintaining an archive of history and engaging with our community. The Mamakating Historical Society archive is housed in the former Summitville Schoolhouse, located at 163 Summitville Road in Summitville, NY. This

structure was built around 1854 and, after decades of neglect, was purchased by the Town of Mamakating to act as a home for our collections. Recent improvements to our structure include the addition of a new office for the Town Historian of Mamakating. In addition to preserving artifacts, the Mamakating Historical Society also looks to engage with the community through a variety of methods. Joining MHS rewards you with our newsletter, generally published twice a year with articles on town history authored by a wide range of individuals. Additionally, MHS offers a variety of programs on local history and the arts, all open to thew public, in addition to its annual meeting held in July and the annual winter Toy Train Show. As few bridges from the New York, Ontario & Western Railway survived after its abandonment in 1957, let alone large concrete arch underpasses, this bridge along Red Hill Road outside of Phillipsport has been a popular railfan and local history destination for decades.

In the days when Summitville served as Sullivan County's primary railroad junction, several hotels were located in the area. One of the largest was the Hotel Jones, located adjacent to the New York, Ontario & Western Railway station in Summitville. In fact, railroad tracks can be seen in the foreground of this postcard.
