Building Students Today. Building Teachers for Tomorrow.
This week, the Rotary Club of Sugar Land had the privilege of welcoming Dr. Roopa Gir, Co-Founder and Board Chair of iEducate, for an inspiring conversation about education, mentorship, and the future of our communities.
Dr. Gir brings an extraordinary journey to this mission.
A geophysicist with a Ph.D. in Seismology, she spent more than three decades with Schlumberger, including nearly 20 years working internationally, before turning her attention to public education.
A Gold Medalist from IIT Roorkee, she has also been recognized by her alma mater as a Distinguished Alumna for her contributions to technology and community service.
But what brought her to Rotary this week was the work she began in Houston in 2013.
While recruiting highly educated talent during her scientific career, Dr. Gir began asking an important question:
How do we get more young people interested and prepared in math and science—and how early do we need to start?
That question eventually became iEducate.
What began with approximately $500,000 in seed funding from Schlumberger evolved after Dr. Gir and her team entered elementary classrooms and discovered that the challenge was much deeper than STEM interest.
Children were struggling with foundational learning, while schools were simultaneously facing a shortage of well-prepared teachers.
iEducate developed a model to address both problems at once.
The organization places trained, paid college students directly alongside experienced teachers in K–6 classrooms. Children receive more individualized and small-group support, while college students gain extensive real-world classroom experience—and many discover a calling to become educators themselves.
Today, iEducate reports having engaged 1,000+ college tutors and reached more than 87,000 children across 150+ schools.
But the moment from Dr. Gir’s presentation that stayed with us wasn't a statistic.
She shared the story of a fourth-grade girl who wasn't doing her work because she had come to believe she was “dumb.”
A young iEducate mentor sat beside her. He encouraged her and gave her something she desperately needed: someone who believed she could succeed.
Over time, the child began to change.
And so did her mentor.
He later reflected that he had once approached opportunities by asking what he could gain from them.
This reminds us that sometimes children and teens may connect differently with a “big brother” or “big sister” figure—someone closer to their age who they can relate to, look up to, and learn from in a different way than they might with a parent or teacher.
His experience mentoring children taught him instead to think about what he could contribute to building his community.
That message resonated deeply in a Rotary room.
That is Service Above Self.
The testimonials from educators reinforce the impact. One HISD partner teacher reports students working with an iEducate tutor improving 20–50 points on District MAP assessments, along with noticeable gains in confidence and classroom participation.
Spring ISD Superintendent Dr. Lupita Hinojosa has also spoken about seeing the program improve student outcomes while inspiring college students to consider teaching careers.
The model is now receiving national recognition. In 2026, iEducate was selected to represent Houston in the Community Collaboration Challenge—one of only 20 communities chosen from more than 700 applicants nationwide.
And Dr. Gir is already looking toward what comes next.
Through Vision 2030, iEducate aims to help develop approximately 500 qualified teachers each year while reaching 25,000 children annually.
The connection to Rotary could not be more meaningful. Basic Education and Literacy is one of Rotary’s key areas of focus, and iEducate demonstrates what can happen when education, mentorship, youth leadership, and community service come together.
One child gains confidence.
One college student discovers a calling.
One teacher gains support.
One community grows stronger.
Thank you, Dr. Roopa Gir, for sharing your journey, the mission of iEducate, and a powerful reminder that investing in education doesn't impact just one child—it can strengthen an entire generation.
Service Above Self. In action.
