πŸ™ A heartfelt thank you to City Councilmembers Sanjay Singhal (Sugar Land), Abhi Utturkar (Fulshear), Monica Riley (Missouri City), and Xavier Herrera (Stafford) for joining DISHA USA's inaugural "Meet the Civic Leader" session on March 11! 🌟

It was an informative, relaxed, and fun evening facilitated by our very own Sangeeta Dua. It was a wonderful reminder of just how much civic leaders do for their communities.

Here are a few things we learned about City Council Members:
πŸ›οΈ They set long-term priorities and establish city budgets
πŸ‘₯ They work for the people, not for the Mayor
🀝 They hire key city officials: the City Manager, City Attorney, and City Secretary
⏰ It's largely a volunteer role, but incredibly fulfilling
❌ Not allowed to discuss issues/topics among themselves (Texas Open Meeting Act)
πŸ“§ Best way to reach them? Their official email on the city's website.

Despite leading cities of very different sizes, these four leaders shared remarkably similar thoughts and are each working hard to tackle the unique challenges their communities face.

This is exactly one of DISHA USA's objectives: building bridges between our community and the civic leaders who shape our daily lives. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Stay tuned for our next "Meet the Civic Leader" session!

β€’ Brittanye L Morris
β€’ Haroon Mughal
β€’ Maggie Salomon
β€’ Nabil Shike
β€’ Robert Nnake

Republican Candidates
β€’ Abolaji Ayobami
β€’ Ramesh K Cherivirala

We are grateful to Ian Sharfman for moderating the discussion, and to Fort Bend Libraries – University Branch for generously providing the venue.

Forum video is available on our page and will continue to be available on YouTube: https://youtu.be/BoRAPKb6HyU

These forums create valuable opportunities for candidates and community members to connect, exchange perspectives, and learn from one another. A heartfelt thank you to all the DISHA USA volunteers whose dedication makes events like this possible.

REMINDER: Early Voting starts Feb 17 until Feb 27 and Election Day is March 3.

Below are the questions submitted by the audience at the forum that could not get asked due to time limitations. All candidates are welcome to respond to these questions and/or any other questions/topics from the forum:
1. Transparency & Accountability: How would you implement new technologies to make things more transparent?
2. When we talk about new infrastructure, Mr. Haroon mentioned Fulshear which is Precinct Β½ not pct 4. Does he have any specific plan to introduce new development for business (that does not include free rent).
3. How do you intend to accommodate affordable homes projects
4. How do you plan to increase mobility access to residents who need it
5. What will you not do?
6. Are there any regulations for building?
β€’ Any environmental impact assessments for buildings?
β€’ So many new shopping strips & concrete
7. Data centers while enabling growth often face scrutiny for massive power and water consumption, noise pollution, and limited long term growth. Do you think data centers would be a good fit?
8. How are we planning to bring business to FBC? What are some specific initiatives in place for first time biz owners?
9. What are the specific ideas that you can share about raising the revenue for the FBC other than taxes?
10. 75% of the county's budget came via property tax. We have no control of other entities tax rate. What is the plan to balance budget with county's workforce and infrastructure needs.
11. How committed are you to fighting to keep our Associate Judges? There was an attempt to reduce the number of associate judges although the administration of justice is 2% of the budget. This would cause a huge backlog and delay jusctice.
