Why does safe medication disposal matter and why is our town getting involved?

Unused medications sitting in homes are a common source of accidental misuse, first exposure, and access for young people. Taking a few minutes to safely dispose of them can help reduce risk before it starts.

Prevention is not always a big moment. Sometimes it is a simple action at home that helps keep families and communities safe.

It can be as small as having a conversation with the young people in your life, building connection before crisis occurs.

Using your drug disposal pouch is simple:

1️⃣ Place unused or expired medications into the pouch
2️⃣ Add warm water
3️⃣ Seal & throw it away in your regular household trash

The pouch safely neutralizes medications (over-the-counter, prescription, and even pet medication!) while also helping protect the environment.

This simple step prevents misuse before it starts!

You got your pouch in the mail… now what?

As part of the Prevention Starts with You™ initiative, Suffield residents recently received Deterra drug deactivation pouches and information on how to safely dispose of unused medications at home.

Unused medications in the home are a common source of accidental misuse and first exposure, especially for young people. Taking a few minutes to safely dispose of them is a simple step that can help keep our community healthy and safe.

Proud that Suffield became the first town in Connecticut to bring this initiative directly to every household.

The Suffield Youth Leadership Council hosted a “Substance-Free Day” at Suffield High School. Students visited our table to share reasons why they stay substance-free, to receive bracelets with positive drug-free messages as well as temporary tattoos and info on healthy ways to manage stress. Participation exceeded all expectations!
