From Facilities to Leadership — Building a Career at SJSB ⚓

When Ashton Meetze joined St. Johns Ship Building in 2018, he started in our Facilities Department with a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn.

Since then, Ashton has continued to take on new challenges, developing his skills in shipfitting, welding, and aluminum fabrication. Along the way, mentorship, hands-on experience, training, and Ashton's own initiative helped him continue moving forward. He has strengthened his technical expertise by earning certifications in MIG Pulse welding, ABS, SCP, and CPR.

Today, Ashton serves as an Aluminum Fabrication Lead, where he uses his experience to help guide and develop others while supporting the quality craftsmanship our vessels demand.

Ashton's journey represents exactly what we want career growth at SJSB to look like: an opportunity to learn a trade, build new skills, take on greater responsibility, and create a career path within our company.

We're proud of Ashton's accomplishments and excited to see where his career takes him next.

Some of our student athletes braved the weather today to participate in the Eastern Shore Open ATA Trap shoot held at the Sudlersville S***t Club. While not a team or school sanctioned event, these kids took the initiative to jump in and compete with the big guys! A great showing for our team!! Our kids kept pace with many world class trap shooters today. We appreciate their heart and dedication to the sport.

A stable home can change the direction of an entire family’s future. ❤️

On National Nonprofit Day, we’re celebrating what becomes possible when families experiencing homelessness have a safe place to live and the support they need to build lasting stability.

On our five-acre campus, parents work toward greater independence while children have a stable home and opportunities to learn, grow, and simply be kids. This summer, children participated in enrichment programs and camps, and 40 school-age children started the new year with backpacks, supplies, and a community cheering them on.

Our impact reaches beyond campus, too. Through July, our food pantry served 3,916 households in 2026, helping local families put food on the table and stretch limited household budgets.

And we’re growing our ability to serve. Our new Office and Service Building and expanded food pantry are open, with 16 additional affordable rental homes planned for the next phase of our campus expansion.

None of this happens without the donors, volunteers, churches, businesses, partners, and neighbors who make this work possible every day.

Fredy’s connection to Talavera runs deep, he began painting Talavera pottery in a neighborhood workshop in El Salvador at just 11 years old. Today, he brings that lifelong passion, creativity, and expertise to the RiverArts Clay Studio.

Something new!

We are working with the Homeless Coalition St Johns County on a community-created public mural in St. Augustine in early 2027, funded through the United Way of St. Johns and Putnam Counties.

The project will pay homage to the extraordinary ledger art created by Native American artists imprisoned at Fort Marion - now Castillo de San Marcos National Monument - during the late 1800s. The mural design will also draw visual inspiration from the historic Tiffany glass installation at Flagler College bringing these influences together in a large-scale community artwork.

The mural will be created on transportable panels, allowing us to take the project to several locations throughout the St. Augustine area. Children, families, artists, and other community members will be invited to pick up a brush and help paint!

Funding was made possible through the generous legacy of philanthropist Delores Barr Weaver and the United Way of St. Johns and Putnam Counties. The fund supports smaller grassroots nonprofit organizations developing innovative programs with measurable outcomes that support student mental health.

For us, that mission is a natural fit. Collaborative art gives young people an opportunity to work together, learn about the history of their community, express themselves creatively, and leave behind something permanent that they helped create.

More to come as we begin turning this idea into a mural!

We spent the morning with Miss Jacqueline at Lockbriar Farms figuring out how the Lockbriar Agricultural Discovery Trail is going to work!

We are working with the Lockbriar Agricultural Education Foundation to create a plan for five 4’ x 10’ community painted murals exploring pollinators, Indigenous crops, birds of the fields, farm life from the colonial period to the present, and invasive and beneficial insects & spiders.

The murals - created on transportable panels at schools, Lockbriar Farms, community centers and public events - will be placed throughout the farm, creating a trail where visitors can explore how farming works and how people, plants, animals and insects are all connected to the land.

Five murals. One working farm. A whole lot to discover!

Join us at the Chestertown Farmers' Market on Saturday, August 8, to help design the Lockbriar Agricultural Education Foundation mural project slated for installation at Lockbriar Farms if we are successful in the grant acquisition process.

As part of the application we will be displaying a variety of design possibilities at market and inviting community input as we create a new mural trail exploring the history and practices of agriculture on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, from the Algonquins to the present day.
