💙💛 Did You Know? Facts About Public Charter Schools
Sometimes there are misconceptions about what it means to be a charter school. Springville Community Academy is a PUBLIC charter school, and we want families to know what that means!
🐝 No district lines.
SCA can welcome students from anywhere in Indiana. You do not have to live within a particular school district to attend.
🐝 Public means FREE.
There is no tuition to attend SCA.
🐝 Charter schools are accountable.
Like other Indiana public schools, charter schools participate in state accountability and reporting through the Indiana Department of Education. Charter schools also have an additional layer of accountability through their authorizer.
🐝 Our charter depends on our performance.
A charter is not simply granted forever. Authorizers monitor the schools they authorize and have authority over charter renewal, nonrenewal, and revocation.
🐝 Enrollment is open to all students.
A public charter school cannot selectively choose its students. If there are more applicants than available seats, Indiana law requires a public random drawing.
🐝 Students with disabilities are welcome.
Having an IEP does not disqualify a student from enrolling in a public charter school. Charter schools are public schools and must comply with applicable federal special-education requirements.
🐝 Charter schools are independently audited every year.
IDOE requires Indiana charter schools to undergo an independent annual audit, adding another layer of financial accountability and transparency.
💙 Qualified, Licensed Teachers: Every teacher at SCA holds an Indiana educator license. We value teachers who bring strong educational backgrounds, professional experience, and subject-area expertise to our students.
💛 Teachers Are Empowered to Teach: SCA provides state-approved curriculum aligned with Indiana Academic Standards while empowering teachers to use their strengths, expertise, and professional judgment to meet students’ individual learning needs.
💙 Support Can Change as Students Grow: Student groups, interventions, and supports are flexible. As students make progress or their needs change, we can adjust services and instructional groups rather than allowing a label, program, or initial assessment to permanently define what a student needs.
💛 Every Student Belongs at SCA: Students with IEPs are an important part of our school community. We work to provide each student with the services, supports, and learning environment identified by their IEP team to meet their individual needs.
💙 We work with homeschool families. We understand that education does not have to look exactly the same for every family, and we are willing to have conversations about ways SCA may be able to partner with homeschool families.
💛 We believe families deserve choices. Traditional public schools, public charter schools, homeschooling, and other educational options can all serve important roles for Indiana families.
School choice isn't about being against another school. It's about families having the opportunity to find the educational environment that best meets the needs of their child.
