ONE HUNDRED THIRTY TWO YEARS AGO - October 24-25, 1894, Clubwomen from nearly every city in Ohio gathered in Springfield by invitation of Clementine Buchwalter, Ohio State Chairman of Correspondence for the General Federation of Women's Clubs, to form the Ohio Federation of Women's Clubs. From May to October 1894, Clementine sent out thousands of letters, addressed numerous clubs around the state and with her committee of six other women prepared and called on the literary clubs and club women of Ohio to attend a convention in Springfield on October 24-25, 1894.
The members of the Traveler's, Fortnightly & Tuesday Clubs of Springfield served as hosts during the convention. The Arcade Hotel was the headquarters for the visiting delegates, however due to such a large turnout, many Springfield club women had to open their homes to the visitors. Seventy-eight clubs sent 233 delegates and many other club women attended, making the convention a success with over four hundred women in attendance. The first day the meeting began at 2pm in the new Masonic Temple's Blue Lodge Room in the Bushnell Block. Clementine Buchwalter opened with a formal welcome and a statement of the object of the convention. Several speeches by others followed: "State Federation", "Reasons for State Organizations", "The Club as a Factor in Women's Life". Clementine had the foresight to invite Ellen Henrotin, President of GFWC, who gave an explanatory speech of General and State Federation. After much discussion, a motion was made to form a state federation, which was carried, and the Ohio Federation of Women's Clubs was officially formed. A reception was held that evening in the parlor rooms at the Arcade Hotel. The constitution and officers were selected the following day and OFWC was admitted into GFWC on October 26, 1894.
Clementine Buchwalter opened her home at 805 East High Street to local women for gatherings for many years, hosting all OFWC Presidents and GFWC Presidents, except the first, and she was known throughout the country for her hospitality. The Woman's Town Club of Springfield, Ohio, was founded in 1922 and purchased the former Buchwalter House, our mission is "to provide a social center for citizens in the Springfield area community and to maintain the preservation of this gracious historical home".
