Growing with Intention: Is Your Nonprofit Ready to Scale?

Many small nonprofits want to grow—serve more people, secure larger grants, attract major donors, expand programs, or increase their community impact. But growth brings new demands, and securing additional funding is only one part of being ready to scale.

This session will help nonprofit leaders look beyond fundraising and consider the organizational capacity needed to successfully manage growth. If your organization received a major gift or large grant tomorrow, would you have the staff, systems, and infrastructure to put those resources to work effectively? Do you have enough employees—and the right expertise—to manage expanded programs and increased reporting requirements? Is your volunteer base large and dependable enough to support growth without exhausting the people who are already involved?

Participants will explore the key areas nonprofits should evaluate before pursuing significant expansion, including staffing and leadership capacity, volunteer recruitment and retention, financial management, board readiness, technology and operational systems, policies and procedures, program evaluation, communications, and fundraising infrastructure.

The session will also address an often-overlooked question: What happens after you get the funding? A $100,000 grant can create tremendous opportunity, but it can also expose weaknesses in an organization that does not yet have the capacity to administer the grant, deliver the promised outcomes, track results, and sustain the work after the funding ends.

Rather than treating growth as simply “doing more,” this training will help organizations think about what they need to build before they grow. Participants will leave with practical questions and tools they can use to assess their organization’s current capacity, identify gaps, determine what investments should come first, and develop a realistic plan for sustainable growth.

A big thank you to Mike McGreevey for leading last week’s Rise & Thrive session, A Roadmap for New Leaders.

Stepping into a leadership role at a nonprofit can be exciting, but it also comes with a lot to navigate. Mike shared practical guidance to help new and emerging leaders build confidence, strengthen their organizations, and better understand the responsibilities that come with leading people and advancing a mission.

That’s exactly what Rise & Thrive is about: giving nonprofit professionals useful information, resources, and connections they can take back to their organizations and put to work.

And remember: all Rise & Thrive sessions are FREE to attend, even if you’re not an AFP member. We believe stronger nonprofit professionals help build stronger organizations and, ultimately, a stronger community.

Thank you, Mike, for sharing your time and expertise with us, and thank you to everyone who joined us!

A huge thank you to Michael Baldree, CPA, Founder of Crosswind CFO Advisory, for an outstanding Greater Springfield AFP Rise & Thrive session on nonprofit revenue diversification!

Michael challenged us to think beyond simply having multiple revenue sources. True financial resilience comes from the breadth of those sources—ensuring your organization's funding doesn't ultimately converge into a single point of vulnerability. Whether it's one major grant, one fundraising event, or one key donor segment, overreliance on any one source can put your mission at risk.

His practical framework for assessing your current revenue mix and taking intentional, achievable steps toward greater diversification gave attendees valuable strategies to strengthen capacity and build long-term sustainability.

If you're interested in evaluating your organization's revenue health and developing a more resilient funding strategy, reach out to Michael at [email protected].

Thank you, Michael, for sharing your expertise and helping our nonprofit community build stronger, more sustainable organizations!

A healthy nonprofit depends on more than generous donors—it depends on a balanced and sustainable mix of revenue. Relying too heavily on a single funding source can leave organizations vulnerable, while a diversified revenue strategy creates greater stability, flexibility, and long-term impact.

Join us for the next Greater Springfield AFP Rise & Thrive session as Michael Baldree explores why revenue diversification is essential for nonprofit sustainability. Drawing on his financial expertise, Michael will help participants assess their organization's current revenue mix, identify potential risks and opportunities, and learn practical, achievable steps to begin diversifying revenue over time.

Rather than focusing on accounting rules, this session will provide strategic guidance that nonprofit leaders, fundraisers, finance professionals, and board members can immediately apply to strengthen their organizations, increase capacity, and build greater financial resilience.
