ORGANIC BROADCASTER Article Feature • Spring Issue

Cover crops aren't just for the off-season anymore.

This issue’s Living Aisles article explores how Wisconsin farmers are integrating cover crops directly into vegetable production systems to improve soil health, reduce erosion, increase biodiversity, and create more resilient farms.

Through real-world examples from three innovative farms, this article offers practical insight into the benefits, tradeoffs, and evolving philosophy behind living aisles systems.

This article is part of a broader theme of collaboration, building coalitions, and relationships. The issue also includes farmer stories, mentorship insights, Q&As, media recommendations from the field, and conversations exploring the connections that strengthen organic agriculture.

Last week, we were lucky enough to hear from Andi Otto, executive director of Twin Cities Pride. The organization turned itself into a food hub during last winter's ICE crackdown, demonstrating what allyship looks like in the moment. What a beautiful evening!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for GROWN HERE: Marbleseed’s Farm-to-Table Fundraiser at Seven Acre Dairy Company.

Together, we celebrated the farmers, chefs, makers, and community members helping build a more resilient Midwest food system rooted in organic agriculture, stewardship, and connection.

From the incredible farmer–chef collaborations and thoughtfully crafted seasonal menu to the conversations shared across the table, this evening was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when we invest in relationships between land, food, and community.

We’re deeply grateful to our chefs, farmer partners, beverage sponsors, musicians, volunteers, donors, and guests for making this gathering so meaningful.

And most importantly, thank you for supporting Marbleseed’s work to educate, inspire, empower, and advocate for organic farmers across the Midwest.

Ying Lo didn’t plan on becoming a farmer.

But through illness, uncertainty, and a small plot of garlic, she found something unexpected — healing, purpose, and a deep connection to land and community.

In just a few years, Ying has grown from a reluctant grower into the lead farmer of GreenGold Gardens — building relationships with markets, feeding her community, and embracing organic practices rooted in personal experience.

Her story is a powerful reminder that sometimes the path finds you — and that farming is as much about resilience and relationships as it is about what we grow.
