What if the police officer who arrested you became one of your biggest supporters in recovery?

That's the idea behind C.A.R.E., which now stands for Community Applauding Recovery Efforts.

The program brings together people in recovery and the first responders they may have encountered during some of the hardest moments of their lives. Organizers say the goal is simple: replace cynicism with understanding and stigma with support.

An Owen County Sheriff’s Department deputy is recovering in stable condition after being shot yesterday afternoon during a welfare check on Texas Pike.

According to Indiana State Police, the deputy was conducting a welfare check requested by the Owen County Probation Department when they were met with gunfire. The incident led to a multi-hour standoff involving local, state and federal law enforcement agencies before the suspect, 58-year-old Wendell Hart, surrendered peacefully.

The deputy was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital and remains in stable condition. The investigation remains ongoing, and formal charges are pending review by the Owen County Prosecutor’s Office.
