KofC Marquette Council 588

KofC Marquette Council 588 We value Charity Unity Fraternity Patriotism. Our name was selected in honor of Father Jacques Marquette, a French priest and explorer.

The Knights of Columbus Marquette Council 588 serves three Roman Catholic parishes in Sussex County, NJ: Our Lady of the Lake; St Thomas of Aquin; and Immaculate Conception. The Marquette Council was chartered on June 1, 1901 and became the nation's five hundredth and eighty eighth council of the Knights of Columbus. Father Marquette, a member of the Jesuit Order, was born in France in 1637, and c

ame to the New World to teach Christianity to the Indians and to explore the new country. He settled in Canada and worked with the Indian tribes setting up missions and exploring much of the region around the Great Lakes. He died in Canada in 1675. The Council was "First" headquartered in Franklin Furnace, NJ and has used various locations in Sussex County during its long and successful history. It is currently headquartered in McKenna Hall in Sparta, NJ. During 1987, the First Degree team was certified and in early 1989 the Second Degree team was certified. The degree teams have been extremely active ever since and also hold institutional degrees for newly started councils. The Marquette Council works closely with three Parishes in Sussex County; Our Lady of the Lake in Sparta, St. Thomas in Ogdensburg and Immaculate Conception in Franklin. On February 7, 1988, the Marquette Columbiettes were chartered and in June 1989 the first Squires Circle 3734 was chartered.

“Dear Brother Knights of New Jersey,
I hope this message finds you enjoying a wonderful summer with your family, friends, and Council.

I am pleased to share that the New Jersey State Council was officially recognized by the Supreme Council for achieving Pinnacle status in membership growth, programs, and EFF!

We closed the 2025–2026 Columbian Year on June 30, 2026, with a gross gain of 2,754 new members, representing 133.43% of our goal. This level of growth has not been achieved in New Jersey in 26 years, making this accomplishment especially meaningful for our Order and our jurisdiction.

I want to take this opportunity to thank our Membership Team, led by Mike Leyden, and our Ethnic and Cultural Development Team, led by Hector Jimenez. Both teams did a phenomenal job achieving each of the Supreme incentives throughout the year, including the fourth-quarter incentive of 656 new members. Their performance exceeded expectations, and they are most deserving of our respect, appreciation, and admiration.

This achievement also reflects the dedication, leadership, and hard work of all our members, officers, and Councils across the state. Thank you for your continued commitment to strengthening the Knights of Columbus and advancing our mission of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism.

However, our work is not done. We began the new Columbian Year on July 1, 2026, and while July is traditionally a slower month, we need your continued help and commitment. Please continue inviting the friends, family members, and acquaintances you encounter at church, the community pool, block parties, parish events, and throughout your daily lives to join the Knights of Columbus. Bring them home to their faith community through the Knights. We are the right organization at the right time for Catholic men to strengthen their faith, their families, and their communities.

Have a great remainder of your summer and enjoy the time with your family.”

Vivat Jesus, and Keep the Faith,

James P. Sweeney
