On the eve of a tragic day for America, we humbly unveil the 9/11 memorial completed at Fire Headquarters.

A few members had a vision, and with the help of a local business, were able to make it happen. We want to give a huge shout out to brothers Gibson, Soto, and Pascuiti for spearheading this project. Their long hours and labor made this project possible. And without the help of Ozkar Garage it may not have been possible. They were able to fabricate and donate a stand for us to display this piece of 9/11 steel at Fire Headquarters. We will forever be grateful to them for their contribution to this project at no cost to our members.

As the years pass by, it is every individuals responsibility to never forget a tragedy that affected so many people across this country. As people walk by Fire Headquarters, and as our members walk into work each day, they can remember those lost and those affected.

We will never forget.

Salvage.

Sometimes a forgotten task on the fireground, it is aimed at minimizing property damage and preserving any valuables we can. Members were able to accomplish just that at a recent attic fire. While fire was isolated to the attic and ceiling of the 2nd floor, it is inevitable that water travels down and causes damage to the lower floors.

Our members were able to remove several valuable and meaningful items including this American Flag honoring a Veteran of the Armed Services, as well as family photographs and valuable instruments and musical items.

Suffering a fire can be a devastating and stressful experience, and anything we can do, small or large, to minimize the affect on the family is a win for us.

Thank you Finn for capturing this moment when Captain Whitting of Ladder 81 was able to bring the flag out for the family.

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of retired brother David “MadMex” Abalos, whom was laid to rest yesterday. Brother Abalos was hired on July 8, 1991 and served the residents of Maplewood until his retirement November 1, 2017.

An old school senior man who took tremendous pride in his country, his profession, and his department. Dave was the guy who was tough on new hires, making sure they respected this department and this profession, and understood what it meant to be a firefighter. He was also the type of guy who would lend a helping hand to any of his friends and family. His type is becoming a rarity now a days and he will be sorely missed. To his friends and family and his close brothers on and off the job, our thoughts and prayers will continue to be with you. Rest assured his legacy will live on in the firehouse by the stories we tell and the memories we hold.

Rest easy 242 🫡

Happy to lend a helping hand to show the future Mayors (and hopefully firefighters) what we do here in the firehouse

A big welcome back to Captain Colatruglio! Despite sustaining extensive injuries after falling through a floor while operating as a search crew at a 3rd alarm fire, Captain Colatruglio persisted through his recovery and is back to work. With over 20 years on the job, Captain Colatruglio is also one of our most experienced members. Currently assigned to Station 3 with Engine 34 and EMS, he takes on a critical roll in training our newest members who begin their career assigned to EMS. Welcome back Capt!
