Please join us Saturday June 20, 4-5:30 for a Rain Garden tour led by Kirk Barrett of the Rahway River Watershed Association and Neil Chambers of Chambers Design. Meet at our rain garden behind South Orange Middle School (next to the river bank). We’ll then drive/car pool to two Chambers Design rain gardens in SOMA.

Join us for Green Team volunteer days the next two Saturdays, 10-11:30: June 13: clearing views and cleaning up along the river bank (meet on Mead St bridge over river; bring loppers if you have them). June 20: weeding at the Native Plant Garden by the Duck Pond in Meadowland Park.

Starting soon, we'll be engaging the community in discussions about transitioning completely to electric leaf blowers and more sustainable yard practices for the health of everyone in our community and for the climate. Since 2022, when South Orange adopted a seasonal ban on gas-powered leaf blowers, dozens of municipalities and several states have banned them because of public health and environmental concerns.

South Orange Middle School continues to, each spring, use the “River Curriculum” developed about 10 years ago by the S.O. Environmental Commission. As a new part of the curriculum, Kirk Barrett (President of the Rahway River Watershed Assoc.) recently spoke with Ms. Chirlo’s 7th grade class about our recently established rain garden.
