The Pharmacy Leadership & Education Institute (PLEI) develops leaders among student pharmacists and pharmacists.

Pharmacy Leadership & Education Institute (PLEI) is a non-profit educational foundation dedicated to developing leaders within the profession of pharmacy. PLEI conducts leader-development programs ranging from 1-hour sessions to 5-day immersion programs. Thousands of people have been trained in these programs to date. PLEI fosters opportunities for self-development, to help individuals enhance their capability to serve others.

Leadership is earned through trust, respect, and the willingness of others to follow, not through authority alone. Influence comes from serving others with integrity and honoring their dignity. When leaders build relationships based on mutual respect and shared purpose, they inspire commitment that no position or title can command.

Every leader’s story starts somewhere.

In 1883, a group of pharmacy students at the University of Michigan came together around a simple idea: the profession deserves leaders who learn, serve, and lift others up. 143 years later, that spirit still shapes how pharmacists lead teams, organizations, and communities.

⏰The Deadline Is Approaching for the 2027 Albert B. Prescott Pharmacy Leadership Award!

Nominations close Tuesday, November 10, 2026 at 11:59 PM HST, so there’s still time to recognize an early-career pharmacist who is making a real difference through leadership, service and innovation.

The Prescott Award celebrates emerging pharmacy leaders across all practice settings and backgrounds who are no more than 10 years into their careers.

The 2027 recipient will:
🏆 Receive a $1,000 honorarium
🎤 Deliver an address at APhA2027 in Charlotte, North Carolina
📖 Have the opportunity to develop the address for publication in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association

Eligible nominees must have received their first pharmacy degree in 2017 or later.

Leadership sometimes requires making difficult decisions that uphold principles rather than seeking the easiest compromise. While collaboration is valuable, effective leaders must also have the courage to stand firm when their values and mission are at stake. Leadership balances wisdom, conviction, and the resolve to do what is right, even when it isn't the most popular path.
