2022 SoLa Scholar Kumari Billings is using her passion for theatre to tell stories that challenge perspectives and inspire change

A recent LMU graduate with two bachelor’s degrees in Political Science and Theatre Arts, Kumari curated her first post-grad theatre production, Duppy Know Who Fi Frighten, on October 11th at The Actor’s Company in West Hollywood. Inspired by Jamaican folklore and her ancestry, the production featured four one-act plays, including The Day I Was Happy, which Kumari wrote and directed.

Kumari’s long-term vision is to create more opportunities for Black artists, especially Black women, through theatre. She hopes to produce an off-Broadway play and eventually launch a nonprofit that uplifts artists and uses the arts to inspire change.

We’re proud to see Kumari using her art to share her culture and uplift the next generation of artists and we can’t wait to see her bring more stories to life!

And they're already putting those skills to work!

In just the first few weeks, participants have interviewed local business owners in Leimert Park, gained hands-on experience with Adobe Premiere Pro, and started building professional portfolios that showcase their growing talents!
