"𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘮𝘴 : 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘯"

This year's theme is a call to duty for all, reminding us that 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻. Rather, they are 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 whose development relies on meaningful communication. However, the world, communities, and schools aren't creating an enabling environment for children to hear, in order to make meaning out of what life wants to teach them.

Now come to think of that child/children:
1. Whose mother tongue is sign language

2. Whose feedback can be misunderstood because they speak differently

3. Whose emotions are signed

4. Whose privacy services needs a sign language interpreter

From all Wheelchair Users, 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲.

We want to be free to:
1. Own a functional wheelchair

2. Move forward not be stuck due to barriers

3. Show up not sweating because of inaccessibility architecture

4. Speak up because our energy has been preserved from crawling

5. Attend program without a later or an afterthought provision( of a chair 🪑) because you were never included

REQUEST FOR A LAPTOP SUPPORT
I am writing to respectfully 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗽𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲(3) 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 who completed Ghana National College, Cape Coast and gained admission to 3 universities respectively University of Ghana, University of Education and University of Cape Coast.

As a teacher, I have observed that access to digital tools is becoming increasingly essential for effective teaching and learning. Unfortunately, many of my 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗽, 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼:

1. Participate fully in research,
2. Undertake their assignments
3. Do their online learning activities, and 4. The development of essential digital skills.

𝗜𝗗𝗣𝗗'𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱: 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿, 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀

Today serves as a reminder to society that disability doesn't discriminate, and it's often society that fails to see the abilities of individuals with special needs. We're all reminded that "𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁 in the 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗼𝗼𝗻, 𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴," emphasizing the importance of building a positive consciousness around disability. This awareness is crucial for achieving social progression.

As a society, we must recognize the need to create an inclusive environment that supports individuals with disabilities. This includes:

- Families
- Schools
- Workplaces
- Churches
- Communities

𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗕𝗘𝗬𝗢𝗡𝗗 𝗘𝗬𝗘𝗦 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗔𝗧 𝗚𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗔 𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗟 𝗖𝗢𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗚𝗘

It was an eye saw at the just ended maiden "𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝘆𝗲𝘀" program 2025. Talk of the energy⚡, numbers, Speakers, Speeches and most importantly Disability Lens presence , and the lasting impact.

Two special guests who joined us for this occasion were: Augustina Kpordzro and Carruthers Tetteh Esq. Respectively, 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗮'𝘀 story inspired the students stressing on her resilience, determination and perseverance over the past decade. And Mr. 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗘𝘀𝗾. who is the first VIP Lawyer and Law Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast and an Amy Awardee added his voice, and importantly his story from disability to celebrated success.

As part of Disability Lens participation in this maiden program, presented:

1. A painting (artwork) that simplified our Clarion call for digital inclusion for Persons with Disabilities across the country in our schools, workplaces, homes and communities.

2. A white cane to a confident VIP who didn't own a person whitecane as a basic tool for his inclusion.

3. Nine 9⃣ Disability Lens branded draw string bags to the 9 VIPs who received the laptops.

Our Founder made a powerful presentation on : 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗮.

𝗜𝗳 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗗𝗼 𝗚𝗢𝗢𝗗: 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲.

From the urban to the rural, the concept of 'good' has a universal meaning, and people (whether adults or children) respond to it with the same emotions. That was the feeling of the pupils of Fort Amsterdam MA School at Ankaful in the Central Region when Disability Lens partnered with of Hope to support the children with educational materials for a brighter tomorrow.

Worth mentioning was how the Founder and his Representative strategically donated branded drawstring bags to the Class 3 pupils.

𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝟯?
We chose Class 3, like Class 6, Junior High 3, and Senior High 3, because these levels are transitional classes. These are classes that mark a significant transition in a student's educational journey, often characterized by:
👉A shift in curriculum complexity and depth

👉Increased emphasis on foundational skills and knowledge

👉Preparation for more advanced levels of education

👉Development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills

👉Enhanced student autonomy and responsibility

According to UNESCO, "1 in 5 children worldwide will not complete primary school, and 617 million youth lack basic mathematics and literacy skills." Initiatives like ours aim to bridge this gap and support students in their educational journey.

By supporting students in transitional classes, we can empower them to succeed in their future endeavors.

𝘏𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘺 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘛𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘋𝘢𝘺.
𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗼 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱, 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝘁 𝗔 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲.

As an organization, we don't underestimate the significance of teachers' roles and the lasting impact they can have on their students' lives. At Ankaful in the Central Region, our Founder Daniel Akibe Amoah engaged the staff(10+) of Fort Amsterdam MA Basic School on 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝘈𝘯 𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘰𝘭 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴, 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘥𝘷𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘤𝘺. The interaction revealed how teachers are in readiness to support the call for inclusion in their classrooms.

We call on local leaders, Ghana Education Service, and NGOs/CBOs to aid their efforts through:

1. Policy education
2. Logistics support
3. Inclusive pedagogical 𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘥𝘴

Let's us remindered that Teachers are para-parents/professionals to our children in the classrooms. Therefore the need for our support.

𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗜𝘀 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝘁 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗜𝗻 𝗔 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻.

NGOs are not saviors, all-knowing, nor do they have all it takes to roll out projects or interventions by themselves. Instead, we work with partners, philanthropists, and most importantly, stakeholders who help give life to the African proverb:

"𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗼 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁, 𝗴𝗼 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲. 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗼 𝗳𝗮𝗿, 𝗴𝗼 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿."

On this premise, I wish to acknowledge the following stakeholders who made it possible for us at Disability Lens to partner with 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘍𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 to make an impact (inclusive reading) where it is needed:

As we celebrate literacy and inclusive education, Disability Lens reaffirms our commitment to promoting reading practices that cater to diverse learning needs. Inclusive reading isn't just about decoding words; it's about understanding, interpreting, and applying meaning by all( not by a privilege few or supposedly normal group).

At Disability Lens, we believe every child deserves access to reading materials and strategies tailored to their unique learning style/ability. Our work focuses on advocating for:
𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Tailoring teaching methods to meet individual needs. This helps teachers meet the learning needs of learners given their abilities and styles(visuals, auditory or tactile)

𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆: Leveraging technology to enhance reading experiences. This stresses the need for the use of technology that assist PWDs learn without too much hinderance. For example: Braille sheets, tactile sheets, recorders, hearing aids etc

𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀: Ensuring reading materials are usable by everyone regardless of their state of ability.

𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗪𝗗𝘀: The policies we know of, how well have they been practicalize or operationalize for the benefit and use of the PWDs.

Our recent Inclusive Reading Festival in Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira, Central Region, Ghana, showcased the impact of inclusive reading practices. We trained 30 teachers on differentiated teaching methods, empowering them to support students with disabilities.

Let's work together to create inclusive learning environments ....... In the 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿.

𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗥 𝗶𝘀 𝗸𝗲𝘆.

As an organization, we recognize that we can't do it alone. As a result, we partner with others, raise awareness, and importantly, we share knowledge as a way to remind key stakeholders of our collective mission. In our recent celebration of International Literacy Day, we partnered with The Reading Factory to organize an Inclusive Reading Festival in Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira of the Central Region of Ghana, where ten (10) schools participated (bringing together 100 participants, 30 of whom were Persons with Disabilities).

A total of thirty (30) teachers from the participating schools received training from the Disability Lens team on:

At our just ended Inclusive Reading Festival at Hemang in the Central Region of Ghana🇬🇭.

Our rep and seasoned Educationist, Madam 𝗔𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗮 𝗔𝘀𝗶𝗲𝗱𝘂 𝗚𝘆𝗮𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮 rehashed the need for to be an everyday behavior/culture of all ( from parents to teachers, social workers, policymakers and the entire community) so that in the end no one is left behind because of their state of ability which is no fault of theirs.
