Innovation is not simply about creating something new. It is about seeing possibilities where others see limitations and having the courage to pursue a different way forward.

As Dr. Albert Szent-Györgyi reminds us, innovation begins with curiosity, observation and the willingness to think beyond the obvious.

At the Young Global Leaders Network (YGLN), we believe leadership requires more than ideas. It requires the ability to transform ideas into solutions that create meaningful impact.

Keep questioning. Keep exploring. Keep innovating.

CAN DO WOMAN OF THE MONTH | PROF. ELSIE EFFAH KAUFMANN

What does it mean to be a Can Do Woman?

It means not only breaking barriers, but creating pathways for others to follow.

This month, we celebrate Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufmann, a distinguished biomedical engineer, academic, STEM advocate and one of Ghana’s most recognisable voices in science education.

As the Founding Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Ghana and the first woman to serve as Dean of the School of Engineering Sciences, Prof. Kaufmann has played an instrumental role in advancing engineering education and creating space for more young people, particularly women, to see themselves in STEM.

But her influence extends far beyond the university.

Since 2006, she has served as the Quiz Mistress of Ghana’s National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), becoming a familiar face to generations of Ghanaian students and families. Through the platform, she has helped make science and mathematics more visible, engaging and aspirational for young people across the country.

For many young girls watching the programme, seeing a woman engineer confidently occupy one of the most prominent positions in Ghana’s science education space has carried a message beyond the questions on the screen: you can belong here too.

Her impact also extends to STEM advocacy and education. Through her work with the Elsie Effah Kaufmann Foundation, she continues to support efforts that make STEM education more practical, accessible and relevant to young people and educators.

Her journey demonstrates that influence is not measured only by titles or awards. It is also measured by the doors opened, minds inspired and possibilities expanded for others.

Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufmann represents the spirit of a Can Do Woman: accomplished, purposeful and committed to using knowledge, leadership and visibility to create lasting impact.

We celebrate her for showing generations of young people that excellence in STEM is possible, that leadership has no gender, and that one person’s journey can help shape the aspirations of an entire generation.

Congratulations to Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufmann, our Can Do Woman of the Month.
