Before Jack’s passing, Ida-May and Georgia began to form a special bond. We had hoped they would, as they are around the same age and both female donkeys. Sometimes, the donkeys seem to know exactly who they are meant to be with, and these two girls were meant to be together.

Both Ida-May and Georgia are incredibly sweet, quiet, low-key girls who seem to enjoy each other’s company. Watching their friendship blossom has been so special, especially after the loss of Jack.

Last week, both girls went together to a local foster home, where they will have the opportunity to settle in and continue their lives side by side. We are so happy that they have each other now, and that they will get the one on one time that they need in this wonderful foster home.

Sleepy girls 💤
This weekend we moved Peaches and Pecans up to the donkey dry lot into a smaller pen for a few different reasons.

We will be focusing on their training with hoof handling mostly, and to lessen the amount of animals in the main pen while it’s under construction.

Arwen, Dixie and Daisy can still see them from where they are, and have been totally unphased by this transition, confirming our suspicions that the trio are not particularly bonded to Peaches and Pecans.

These two are really enjoying getting a little rest and relaxation in a pen all to themselves. I think all the hustle and bustle being in a bigger herd was causing some sleep depravation. The girls have been laying down to rest a LOT, and have been utilizing the sheds filled with shavings.

Peaches let me give her a partial warm bath to get some urine stains and fly strike spots off of her legs, and today she was picking up both front feet for me when I asked.

They are both such brave and beautiful girls. We are taking things slower with Pecans, she is in pain on one of her front hooves. Next week we are going to do X-rays to hopefully get some answers on what’s going on so we can help her to be more comfortable. 🧡🤍

Albert and Josephine are STILL looking for the right home! These two are 20-year-old bonded miniature donkeys, but you would never guess their age by looking at them! They are both spry, happy, and have many wonderful years ahead of them to love and be loved. They are just as sweet as they are cute, and this adorable pair would love to find a family of their very own.

Albert and Josephine are wonderful to halter, handle, and brush, and they lead well, too! According to their previous owner, they have even participated in parades. Both donkeys are great with children and are gentle when taking treats from little hands.

They are up to date on their vaccinations, dental exams, hoof care, and veterinary care, and they are ready to find their forever home.

These two sweethearts have so much love to give and would be thrilled to have their own people to love and care for them. ❤️

If you are interested in adopting Albert and Josephine, please fill out an adoption application. We will be in touch about setting up a time for you to come meet them!

Yesterday afternoon, we said goodbye to our sweet boy, Jack. This was a very hard decision to make, but his body was failing, and winter would not have been kind to him.

Jack arrived at SYA only a few months ago with his companion, Ida-May. Jack stole everyone’s hearts here at the rescue with his quirky little head tilt, his sing-songs at breakfast and supper, the way he’d rest his very heavy head on your shoulder, and his general sweet demeanor.

When Jack looked at you, it felt like he was looking right through you and loved what he saw. Jack loved everyone he met, and everyone who met him loved him, too.

We are grateful for the time we got to spend with this sweet old guy, but it did not feel long enough. I don’t think it ever really does. Jack was spoiled rotten these last few weeks, and especially the last few days leading up to yesterday. He got all the sugary cookies donkeys can’t have, along with peppermints, apples, and carrots galore. He was brushed, got ear rubs and snuggles, and was told how special he was to all of us here.

Thank you to everyone who loved Jack, and donated to his care while he was with us. Thank you also to Will from B.C Construction for coming to handle Jack’s burial.

We love you, Jack. ❤️
