If you've ever met Lucy, you already know she's not your average green iguana. In fact, she's quite the anomaly!
**Thousands of people have had the opportunity to meet Lucy, pet her, love on her, and experience firsthand just how incredible reptiles can be.** She's never bitten anyone. She's never tail-whipped anyone. She doesn't have a mean bone in her body. She absolutely LOVES the attention, and she's become one of the biggest staples of Scaley Addictions Reptile Rescue.
But Lucy's story didn't start out so beautifully. 💔
A little over four years ago, Lucy came into our lives after being discovered living in a **CHINCHILLA CAGE.** Yes, you read that correctly.
She was severely emaciated, her lower left lung had partially collapsed, and she was egg-bound with **56 EGGS** inside her tiny, battered body. There was so little room left inside her that her stomach was compressed, making it nearly impossible for her to eat.
She needed life-saving surgery, and she needed it FAST.
But Lucy fought. And she survived. ❤️
And somehow, despite everything humans had put her through, she never lost her gentle spirit. It was almost as if she knew she was finally safe, loved, and exactly where she belonged.
Fast-forward four years, and Lucy has become one of our greatest ambassadors. She's helped change minds, overcome fears, and teach thousands of children and adults that reptiles aren't the scary, aggressive creatures they're often made out to be.
**Now it's our turn to fight for Lucy again.** 🥺
A few weeks ago, I noticed that Lucy's lip was beginning to protrude. Naturally, I checked her mouth for signs of mouth rot but didn't see anything obvious.
One of our wonderful volunteers, who is also a veterinarian, was able to get a better look and discovered something concerning — **a mass underneath her tongue.**
Today, Lucy went to the veterinarian for further evaluation.
X-rays were taken to determine whether the mass was originating from the bone, which would raise serious concerns about cancer.
❤️ **The GOOD news? The mass does NOT appear to be coming from the bone!**
The uncertain news? We still don't know exactly what we're dealing with.
Our veterinarian is hopeful that it isn't cancer, but we won't know for certain until the mass is removed and evaluated.
And unfortunately, that means another surgery for our sweet girl.

We don't ask lightly. We know everyone has bills, responsibilities, and their own struggles. But as a nonprofit rescue caring for so many animals, unexpected surgeries like this can put a tremendous strain on our resources.
