📢 Program Update: Hefty ReNew Orange Bags

Reynolds Consumer Products has announced that it is ending the Hefty ReNew Orange Bag program for hard-to-recycle plastics because markets for the material didn't scale as anticipated. Bags will no longer be available for purchase by the end of 2026.

The City of Smyrna curbside recycling program and the Smyrna Recycling Center will keep accepting Hefty ReNew Orange Bags until March 31, 2027.

Ending the program is not a decision made by the City of Smyrna or Keep Smyrna Beautiful, which remain committed to providing effective recycling programs, protecting the environment and keeping Smyrna clean, green, and beautiful.

The good news is that curbside recycling and the Smyrna Recycling Center will otherwise remain unchanged and will continue to accept all the same materials they do now.

Smyrna began accepting Hefty ReNew Orange Bags in 2020 and, with the help of committed residents, has diverted approximately 200,000 pounds of hard-to-recycle plastics from landfills through the program. We're proud of how committed Smyrna residents are to protecting the environment, and we'll keep exploring ways to give residents access to recycling for hard-to-recycle plastics.

The Hefty ReNew program officially ends June 2027. After that, anyone with unused Orange Bags can contact Hefty at hefty.com/hefty-renew for return and refund instructions.

The changing season is already transforming the Pollinator Pocket gardens in Smyrna. Late summer and fall blooms like New York aster and blue mist flower provide food sources for bees and butterflies as other blooms are winding down. Seed heads and berries feed the birds.
