This is the opening lyric of the children’s song “La Carpio Dreams Like This,” produced this year at the grade school:
“We are children of La Carpio and we have dreams here.
There are families who work hard and friends to share life with…
We want peace in the streets, we want to see calm when we look around.”
These children dream of something most of us have never had to worry about: peace and harmony in the streets of their community. A chance to walk to school or church or the store without fear. A chance to see mom or dad off to work and know they are going to make it back. A chance to play and be a carefree kid.
There are good, kind, hardworking people in this community, and those people know what they want their neighborhood to become. Even the children know that a life of fear, despair, or tragedy is not what it should be, not what God intends for them.
This is their dream. And we’re listening.
