Hello and welcome to or welcome back to Facts friday!

Today our topic is how our furry friends domesticated themselves!

Dogs domesticated themselves through a process called "self-domestication".
Around 15,000 to 30,000 years ago, some brave, less-fearful wolves began scavenging for food scraps around prehistoric human campsites. This evolutionary shift happened in a few distinct phases:The Scavenger Advantage: Less-aggressive wolves that were comfortable approaching humans got an easy, reliable food source.Natural Selection for Friendliness: These bolder wolves were more likely to survive, reproduce, and pass on their genes, leading to generations of canines with lower stress thresholds and a higher tolerance for humans.Physical and Behavioral Changes: Breeding for friendliness inadvertently caused physical alterations like floppy ears, wagging tails, and shorter snouts. Over time, these proto-dogs developed a symbiotic relationship with humans—exchanging camp protection and hunting assistance for warmth and food scraps. You can read more about this fascinating evolutionary timeline on the Natural History Museum or review scientific breakdowns of the process on PMC.

Wellcome back to Fun facts friday, friends and new friends we just dont know yet!

Dogs are some of the most fascinating animals on the planet. Their incredible biology and behaviors go far beyond being man's best friend—they have superhuman senses, unique physical traits, and even dream just like we do!

Unique Nose Prints: Just like human fingerprints, no two dog nose prints are identical. They feature unique ridges and patterns!

Here is a pet safe way to do some nose and/or paw impressions at home! (Can be used for cats too 😉🐾)
Homemade clay with flour—often referred to as salt dough—is incredibly easy to make with just three basic kitchen ingredients: flour, salt, and water. It is perfect for sculpting, making handprints, and crafting homemade ornaments.

Ingredients & Ratio
For a standard batch, the most universally loved ratio is:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup table salt to
1 cup lukewarm water

Step-by-Step Instructions
Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk the flour and salt together thoroughly. Add Water: Slowly pour in the water, stirring as you go, until the mixture starts to clump together into a shaggy dough.
Knead: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead it with your hands for 5 to 10 minutes. It should feel smooth, pliable, and similar to playdough. If it's too sticky, add a sprinkle of flour; if it's too dry, add a few drops of water.
Color (Optional): You can add drops of food coloring or acrylic paint during the mixing process to create colored clay.
Drying & BakingYour sculpted pieces can be dried in one of two ways:Air Dry: Leave your creations on a baking sheet or tin foil in a dry area for 2 to 3 days (depending on their thickness).Bake: For faster results, bake in the oven at 200°F (95°C) for 2 to 3 hours. Keep the temperature low to avoid bubbling or browning.
Finishing Touches
Once the clay is completely cooled and hardened, you can use acrylic paints and seal it with a clear varnish (like Mod Podge) to make your creations last!

Hello everyone and welcome back to 🐾Fun Facts Friday🐾
Todays topic is Walks during surmmer!
Dog paws are sensitive to heat since that is the main place the exert heat (like we talked about last week 😉),
Hot concrete can cause severe burns and blisters to a dog's sensitive paw pads in lesz than a minute! Concrete retains heat aggressively, and if the air is 85°F, the sidewalk can reach an unbearable 135°F to 150°F. So if youre planning on taking youre dog on a walk use The 7-Second Rule Before taking your dog out for that walk on the pavement, always test the surface temperature.
Place the back of your hand flat on the concrete for 7 seconds. If it is too hot for your hand to tolerate, it is too hot for your dog's paws.

Signs of Burned Paw Signs of Burned Paw Pads

Even if dogs feel pain, they may not immediately show it, so it is important to inspect their paws. [1]

Limping or refusing to walk.

Licking or chewing at their paws repeatedly.

Redness, missing chunks of skin, or visible blisters.

Paw pads that appear darker than usual. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Immediate First Aid

If you suspect your dog's paws are burned, you must treat the injury and get them out of the heat to prevent heatstroke. [1]

Cool the Paws: Gently flush the paws with cool water or apply a cold, damp compress for about 10-15 minutes.

Bandage Lightly: Wrap the paws loosely in a clean, dry towel or cotton bandage to prevent infection.

Contact a Vet: Blisters, peeling skin, or deep burns require immediate veterinary attention. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Welcome back to fun facts friday! Today we are talking about OVERHEATING since summer is on us and its getting hot quick! We wanted to remind everyone that dogs dont sweat like humans do, they sweat through their paws and they pant to exert heat.

Make sure to keep your dogs inside at the peak of the day with lots of cool but not ice water since dogs are HIGHLY susceptible to heatstroke and keep lots of cool water. WARNING: Ice water can shock the system so PLEASE dont give them ice water after playing outside.

Canine heat stroke is a life-threatening medical emergency. Watch for heavy, relentless panting, bright red or pale gums, thick drool, pacing, restlessness, seeming distressed, and vomiting or diarrhea. As the heat impacts the brain and organs, it quickly escalates to weakness, stumbling, collapse, seizures, or unconsciousness. If these persist please take you dog to the vet!
