Shelton High School is now entering its twentieth third year of involvement in FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). Team 230, "The Gaelhawks", is both an award-winning team and an active "STEM" force within the community. Students on the team are mentored by professionals in programming, electrical, and mechanical engineering, . The team's primary activity is partici
pating in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). The team splits into groups to develop strategies, then reconvenes and decides on the overall game plan. The next step is to work on designing prototypes for fulfilling the game tasks and begin the implementation of their control system software. As team members experiment with help from mentors, the robot's design slowly comes together. Once the robot is done, potential drive team members are selected, and allows them to practice. However, the robot is not the only thing that gets made during the build season. The team has a spirit committee to make sure the Gaelhawks have a strong presence in the stands. The media team works to creates various videos, brochures, and makes sure the team's website is informative, up-to-date, and easy to use. Team 230 continues to mentor 3 FIRST Lego League (FLL) teams from Shelton intermediate and middle schools. Team 230 also provides assistance to help out any FLL or FRC team in need of assistance. When the team is not building robots, it keeps itself busy by getting involved in the community. Team members participate in a variety of fundraisers and community outreach events every year including Shelton Day and Soupstock. Being part of the team is a yearlong commitment that is both fun and educational.
