The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a notice requesting public comments on a planned initiative to track how state and territory jurisdictions link motor vehicle crash logs directly with injury surveillance and hospital medical data.

The proposed collection of information would allow NHTSA to obtain structured information on States’ and territories’ practices related to linking or integrating motor vehicle crash data with injury surveillance and medical data (e.g., emergency medical services (EMS), emergency department, hospital inpatient discharge, trauma registry, and vital statistics). The notice also proposes investigating the implementation of the EMS Universally Unique Identifier across medical and transit datasets.
Comments are due October 6, 2026, and may be submitted through Regulations.gov under Docket No. NHTSA-2026-1420. For more information, see:https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2026-08-07/pdf/2026-16116.pdf
