Knit Michigan

Knit Michigan Knit Michigan helps cancer patients and their families while promoting the textile arts. We provide chemo caps, blankets and pillows around Michigan.

What is Knit Michigan? Knit Michigan, a registered Michigan corporation, is a 501(c)3 charitable non-profit. Knit Michigan is an independent organization dedicated to supporting cancer patients and their families with financial contributions, as well as by making and donating comfort items such as chemo caps and lap blankets to cancer patients. Knit Michigan brings together fiber-enthusiasts to ra

ise funds that are distributed to local cancer organizations through grass roots efforts and an annual event. These organizations are the recipients of the money we raise: Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, Rose Cancer Treatment Center at Beaumont, Genesys Regional Medical Center, Gilda’s Club, and U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center. Why is it necessary? Knit Michigan fills a need in the Michigan fiber-arts community for individuals to band together to work toward a common cause that has touched many of our lives. It provides an opportunity to give back and make a difference by doing something we love: creating and providing better situations for those we care about who must deal with cancer. What is the purpose of Knit Michigan? Simply put, the main purpose of Knit Michigan is to help others. Many of us have been touched by cancer ourselves or by family, friends or coworkers. Knit Michigan makes supporting cancer patients and their families easy, convenient and fun by donating money and comfort items. The secondary purpose of Knit Michigan is to spread our love for the fiber arts. For a nominal entrance fee, visitors are encouraged to try their hand at spinning, knitting, crocheting, weaving and, for a small fee, dyeing. What has Knit Michigan accomplished? Beginning with our inaugural year, 2007, Knit Michigan has been held in donated space at the Academy of the Sacred Heart (www.ashmi.org) in Bloomfield Hills. Over the years we have raised more than $190,000 to support selected cancer serving organizations. We have also donated over 11,000 comfort items in the form of chemo caps, cuddly knit bears, breast cancer pillows, and pillows and blankets used in the infusion rooms. The comfort items have been gifted to cancer centers around the state, going as far north as Baraga in the Keweenaw Peninsula. Who is involved with Knit Michigan? Michigan knitters, spinners, weavers, crocheters, felters and other fiber enthusiasts support Knit Michigan. In addition we have the participation of knitwear designers, college and community fiber art instructors, guilds, schools and fiber businesses, such as yarn stores and industry suppliers.

One more gratitude post before I call it a day! This past Saturday we participated in a craft and vendor show in Downtown Mt. Clemens. A lovely couple approached our booth and browsed through our handmade quilts. They asked if we would be interested in their late mother’s quilting fabric and supplies, and of course we said we would be grateful. They drove back home, did a quick sort, and drove back to Mt. Clemens. This is the result. I neglected to ask their names, but they said Mom would be tickled pink to have all of her supplies go to a great cause like ours. If you are in need of a baby to youth quilt for gift giving, please feel free to reach out to us and we would be happy to discuss a custom or ready made option with you! Many blessings to this generous family. ❤️

May 28, 2026: On May 21, 2026, Knit Michigan held a work session. We had 10 volunteers show up to help. KM welcomes new volunteer, Diane. Diane got a tour of the work areas and a quick introduction to the variety of tasks. Welcome Diane. Hope to see you at future work sessions.

At the work session, we took advantage of our volunteers’ vast skills and processed a lot of items. We had volunteers cutting fleece for blanket kits. We had one volunteer cutting fleece into neck, mastectomy, and port pillows. We had a volunteer machine sewing the pillows. Once the pillows were machine sewn, a team of volunteers stuffed the pillows, added snaps to neck pillows, hand sewed the openings closed, and packaged finished pillows into individual poly bags.

We also individually packaged finished blankets, hats, and knockers. We had a few volunteers cutting hook and loop tape (think Velcro) into strips to be used on the port pillows. Each port pillow requires two pieces of hook and loop tape to be cut to length and round off the corners of one end on each strip. This is a lot of cutting. Having the strips cut for the seamstress that sews the port pillows is a HUGE help. We really do have an assortment of tasks that need to be accomplished.

As usual, we also had some yarn donations that were sorted and processed. At the end of the fleece cutting, the fleece for blankets were matched with yarn and handed out to volunteers to finish. We also received 7 pair of knockers. Donor unknown.

Our next work session is on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at ChiaoGoo in the Westing Bridge Building, 1950 Stephenson Hwy., Troy, MI. The work session begins at 10 am and ends around 2 pm. May 17, 2026: On May 12, 2026, KM held a work session. Our 13 volunteers worked on processing finished items, cutting fleece for blanket kits, and massive sorting of yarn in preparation for an upcoming Craft Show. See separate post on Relay For Life Event.

Additionally, over the last few weeks and at the work session, KM has received many donated items. Thank you to everyone who donated items. As usual, some donations arrive with the name of the donor and some arrive anonymously.

The pictures are below and I'll post the names I know. If you are a donor, please comment below as you see fit. I know that donating is a personal decision and I want to give credit and respect privacy. Hard act to balance.

We also received fleece from I believe Cheryl. However, it was cut up before a photo op. Cheryl also brought other items that were processed before picture time.

Thank you to everyone who donates. Please know that we are grateful for all donations.
