Unfortunately, there are very few steps that can be taken to prevent hail damage. Even the best management practices don’t reduce the likelihood or severity of damage. After hail damage occurs, the most important first step is to access the damage in various parts of the landscape.

In the vegetable garden, remove any plants that have had more than 50-60% of their leaves stripped off.

Most perennial flowers will recover as new growth will usually be produced from their crowns.
Hire an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) or Nebraska Arborist Association (NAA) Certified Arborist to inspect the crown of shade trees and take note of heavily damaged branches that may need to be removed in the future.
Make notes and take pictures for future reference.

Post-Storm Tree Cleanup
