There is a great sustainability-focused challenge that Seward Parks & Recreation is leading throughout the month of July, called 'Drive Less, Move More.' Leave the car in the driveway and commute using your legs (walking/running and/or biking)! It's open to all ages.

Register in time for the July 1st start to track and enjoy your commuting miles around Seward, reduce emissions, and spend more time outside this summer.

Plus, you can enter to win great prizes, including a $100 gift card to the Seward Outdoor Store and $50 gift cards to the Seward Bike Shop!

How to get started:
💚 Download the Strava app (it’s free—just ignore the pop-ups asking you to pay a fee).
💚Go to Groups > Clubs and search for DLMM 2026.
💚Join the walking/running and/or biking groups.
💚Record your commuting miles around Seward and post your activities to the club!

You can find more info about the challenge details and prizes and in the latest edition of newspaper.

Our co-founder, Tamara Filipović, wrote a piece for the latest The Seward Folly edition in honor of Bike to Work Day! 🚲

She shares how she got started biking to work—plus tips from local experts on staying dry in the rain (Seward Bike Shop), a roundup of recent bike happenings, info on July’s "Drive Less Move More" Challenge (Seward Parks & Recreation), and even a book rec for biking in Alaska.

Read it at www.sewardfolly.com and get inspired to ride 🚴

We hope to see you out there, rain or shine!

The Seward Community Library & Museum has been organizing a series of life skills classes this year and asked us if we could teach bicycle repair skills to the community, and so with their help we held an evening class last month where we went over the ABC’s of bicycle safety and then broke out into groups and spent time building practical skills by checking out and fixing up the attendees own bikes. Folks in the class, including two little ones (!), learned how to adjust tire pressure, check that their wheels are properly fastened to the frame, how to check brake pad wear, how to change brake cables, how to l**e and clean a chain, and more!

Ready to feel more confident on two wheels? Join us for a hands‑on Bike Repair Workshop led by and designed to empower riders of all ages and experience levels. Whether you’re a daily commuter, a weekend trail explorer, or someone dusting off a long‑stored bike, this session will give you the practical skills you need to keep your ride smooth, safe, and road‑ready.

🎉And that’s a wrap! This past Monday, our community enjoyed an evening of inspiring art and storytelling about women biking. Throughout the presentations, a common thread emerged—women celebrating the power of bicycles to bring them FREEDOM, INDEPENDENCE, STRENGTH, and DELIGHT. Again and again, they reminded us that anyone can ride—or set out on a long-distance adventure—regardless of age, ability, or skill!

Finally, we’d like to thank Dr. Carolyn Roloff, the Seward Community Foundation, the Seward Community Library Association, and the Seward Bike Shop for their generous contributions and for helping make this event possible. ❤️
