A housing project in Visby, Sweden, is giving rainwater a surprising new purpose.

Gotlandshem, a public housing company on the island of Gotland, is renovating toilets in 380 apartments so they can be flushed with collected rainwater instead of treated drinking water.
The project is expected to reduce water consumption by around 30 percent. The new system is being installed as part of a larger renovation in the Vitkålen neighbourhood of Bingeby.

Using rainwater for toilet flushing is a practical example of how resources can be used more efficiently. Drinking water requires treatment and infrastructure before it reaches our taps, while rainwater can often be used for purposes that do not require drinking-quality water.

If the project is successful, similar solutions may be introduced in other properties in the future. According to Gotlandshem CEO Joakim Martell, the renovation is not expected to result in higher rents for residents.

GO WITH THE FLOW

Today, take notes from the little frog. No rushing. No forcing. Because some days are meant for doing absolutely nothing at all.

Not everything needs to be solved, rushed, analysed, or controlled. Some things just need time, space, and a little less resistance.

So we hope you go with the flow 😊

Did you know your urine could help grow the food of the future? 🌱🚽
Researchers at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences are exploring an innovative idea: turning human urine into sustainable fertilizer. In the project P*e for the Planet, football supporters at Malmö FF’s home stadium help collect urine from special urinals and mobile toilets. The urine is then dried and concentrated into fertilizer that can be used in agriculture.

Modern farming relies heavily on synthetic fertilizers, which require large amounts of energy and mined resources to produce. Human urine naturally contains valuable nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium — the same key nutrients plants need to grow. Scientists believe recycling these nutrients could help reduce pollution, decrease dependence on chemical fertilizers, and create a more circular and sustainable food system. 🌍

The two-year project aims to collect 1,000 litres before November, showing how everyday waste could become a valuable environmental resource.
Could human waste become part of the solution for a greener planet? ♻️

Okha is a 56-year-old captive Asian elephant who was captured from the wild in 1970. For over five decades, she has been forced to perform as a traveling circus prop, most recently touring with operations like Franzen Bros. Circus, Mysterious Circus, and Loomis Bros.

Key concerns surrounding her current situation include:

Social Isolation: Elephants are highly social, herd-oriented animals. Since 2022, Okha has been kept in solitary confinement without the companionship of any other elephants. Her former companions were previously rehomed to a Six Flags theme park and the Memphis Zoo.

Advanced Age & Performance Demands: At her advanced age, she suffers from physical ailments like arthritis. Despite this, advocates frequently document her being forced to perform degrading tricks, stand on concrete floors, and give rides to crowds of people.

Abuse Documentation: She is owned by Brian Franzen, an exhibitor with a documented history of federal animal welfare violations.

Activists continue to urge the public to contact venues and local city officials to protest her use in entertainment, and try to get her to an accreditedsanctuary. You can learn more about how advocates are fighting for her release or track her current location by visiting the Compassion Works International campaign.

Anders Celsius ( 27 November 1701 – 25 April 1744) was a Swedish astronomer, physicist and mathematician. In 1742 he proposed the Celsius temperature scale in a paper to the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala, the oldest Swedish scientific society, founded in 1710. His thermometer was calibrated with a value of 0 for the boiling point of water and 100 for the freezing point. In 1745, a year after Celsius's death, the scale was reversed by Carl Linnaeus to facilitate more practical measurement.

Carl Linnaeus (23 May 1707 – 10 January 1778), also known after ennoblement in 1761 as Carl von Linné,was a Swedish biologist and physician who formalised binomial nomenclature, the modern system of naming organisms. He is known as the "father of modern taxonomy".

Do you know a cooler baggage carousel than this one at Cairns airport in Australia?

Cairns airport is an airport close to the Great Barrier Reef, and it showcases some of the species you can find in the water. Isn't it cool?

Making water stations for bees. 🐝💧
Bees need water not only to drink, but also to cool their hives, feed larvae, and dilute stored honey during hot weather. In cities and dry environments, safe water sources can be surprisingly hard for them to find.

Creating a simple bee watering station in your garden or balcony can help support local pollinators — especially during warmer months. 🌼
Here is an example of a beautiful one, made from mussel shells.

Healthy bees are essential for healthy ecosystems. Around one-third of the food we eat depends on pollinators like bees. Protecting them can start with something as small as a bowl of water. 🐝🌎
