🌿🦅 Wildlife Wednesday: Experience the Wild Side of the Sebastian River Area!

Wildlife is an essential part of what makes the Sebastian River Area so special. Our birds, fish, sea turtles, manatees, and other native animals help sustain the ecosystems that support our waterways, our community, and the outdoor experiences we love.

Our conservation story is part of American history! In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt established the Pelican Island as the nation’s first national wildlife refuge right here in the Indian River Lagoon. That legacy reminds us how much our wild places matter and why protecting them remains so important.

From pelicans soaring over the waterfront to wading birds along the mangroves, there’s so much wildlife to discover close to home. We invite residents and visitors to explore our trails, paddle our waterways, visit Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge, or enjoy a local guided nature experience. Bring your binoculars, take your time, and give wildlife plenty of space. 🛶

🎣 Wildlife Wednesday: We’re Hooked on the Sebastian River Area!

Just look at this beautiful red drum, also known as a redfish, our friend caught while fishing with a local guide! 🐟☀️ We loved this photo so much, we featured it in our October Visit SRA newsletter.

Want to get to know this lagoon favorite?

🌿 Life in the lagoon: Redfish use seagrass beds, mangrove shorelines, oyster bars, and sandy or muddy bottoms for feeding and shelter. The lagoon provides important nursery habitat for young fish.

🦐 What bait works? Live shrimp under a popping cork is a great starting point! Mullet, small crabs, and mud minnows are also effective choices. Prefer artificial lures? Try soft plastics, spoons, or topwater plugs.

📅 When can you find them? Redfish can be caught throughout the year. Late summer and fall bring spawning gatherings around inlets and estuaries, with Florida’s spawning season generally running August–December. Local concentrations vary with habitat, bait, and conditions.

🎣 Know the rules: Redfish are currently catch-and-release only in the Indian River Lagoon management region, including Sebastian. No harvest is allowed at any size. Handle them gently, support their bodies, and return them promptly to the water.

🍽️ How do they taste? Legally sourced red drum have a mild, slightly sweet flavor and firm, moist flesh, making them popular for blackened or grilled preparations. But our lagoon redfish belong back in the water to keep the adventure going!

You can Catch It, Cook It & Eat It with species that are legal to harvestor catch, admire, and release a beautiful redfish. A local guide can help you plan your fishing adventure!
