Happy International Day of the Girl! 💜

From our youngest learners at Siqajan School to the young women in our CECAP, Scholarship and Youth programs, we’re proud to see girls across Amigos learning, creating, and working towards their goals every day.

Every girl shows us what is possible when given the opportunity to shape her own future. Today, and every day, we celebrate the girls and young women in our community and all that they are capable of!

Play like a girl! Learn like a girl! Create like a girl! Dream like a girl! 💜

Last week, members of the Amigos team had the opportunity to attend two conferences in Guatemala City.

Our directors, Estela and Fiorella, represented Amigos at the Central American Donors Forum (CADF), while Miguel and Cristian, who work in our CECAP and Scholarship programs, attended the El Directorio Networking Event.

These spaces bring together organizations from across the region to exchange ideas, share experiences, learn from one another, and build connections that contribute to positive change and sustainable communities.

We’re very proud of our team for representing Amigos, sharing what we’re doing in Santa Cruz, and bringing new perspectives back to our work and community. 👏

¡Feliz Día del Niño! ❤️

Día del Niño is a day to celebrate children, their dreams, and the unique way they see the world. It’s a reminder of the importance of recognizing their rights and creating safe, supportive environments where every child can learn and thrive.

Children are at the heart of our work. We believe the children of today are the future of Santa Cruz, and we envision a future where they can grow up confident in themselves, with the compassion and motivation to contribute to their community.

Every day, the children we work with inspire us with their curiosity, creativity, joy, and determination.

As National Literacy Month comes to an end, we’re reflecting on the importance of including families in a child’s reading journey. 📚

This week, mothers took part in a workshop to review how they can support their children as they develop their reading skills: helping them stay focused, encouraging them when reading feels difficult, and making time for reading at home.

When families are involved, learning doesn’t stop when a child leaves the classroom. Family engagement helps create continuity between the Reading Program, home, and a child’s ongoing development. ❤️

This Tuesday, September 15, Guatemala celebrated its Independence Day — a day that brings communities together to celebrate the country’s history and identity. 🇬🇹❤️

At Siqajan School, students and teachers marked the occasion in many different ways throughout the month. The flag was raised, teachers shared more about Guatemala’s history, and students took part in local parades celebrating Guatemala’s Independence.

The celebrations also included a special Civic Act and talent show, where students expressed their heritage through painting, song, and dance. The children showed an incredible amount of confidence, pride, and joy as they shared their talents with their classmates, teachers, and families.

These activities help our students celebrate who they are, develop pride in their identities, and gain the confidence to contribute to their communities.

Today, on International Literacy Day, we want to talk about what reading makes possible.

In Sololá, 1 in 4 adults cannot read or write. Among women, it is closer to 1 in 3. In Santa Cruz, those numbers are changing. Years before making the decision to open Siqajan School, Amigos’ Afternoon Reading Program introduced children in Santa Cruz to the joy of reading. Over the years, our testing consistently showed increases in reading fluency and comprehension. But more than that, the program provides a welcoming space that sparks curiosity and wonder through literacy.

As Siqajan School grows, it will continue to uphold trilingual (Spanish, English and Mayan Kachiquel) literacy as a guiding value that will open the door to a brighter future.

Our Siqajan students visited Villa Palatalik, a neighboring vegetable garden🪴 Guided by certified local permaculturist Gregorio Ajcot, they explored how vegetables are grown, how plants are cared for and why protecting our natural resources matters.

For our students, learning happens best through experience: looking, touching, and asking questions. This visit gave them all three. Thank you to our neighbor, Zeffon Wills and Villa Palatalik, for opening their doors.

Supporting local businesses is one of the quietest and most powerful things we do 🍄‍🟫

Right now there are four oyster mushroom businesses growing in our communities and all four are run by women earning their own income.

One of them belongs to Emelia, in Pajomel. Amigos provided the growing house and entrepreneurship training; she does the rest, selling her mushrooms in neighboring towns and building her own customer base along the way.

Looking back at July’s Civic Act at Siqajan School! 💙

Our Kindergarten class took the lead this month in exploring generosity, demonstrating how small acts of sharing, taking turns, and helping others can make a big difference.

Generosity is a valuable lesson that goes far beyond the classroom. When children practise kindness at school, they carry those habits home and into their relationships with siblings, friends, and their wider community.

It’s very special to see our students grow in confidence each month and put the values they explore into practice in their everyday lives. 🌱
