Seattle-based Korean singer-songwriter Iris Kymm moves easily between alternative pop, R&B, jazz and rock, creating music that feels intimate, soulful and completely her own. On September 25, she joins Korean folk-fusion trio Sangjaru at Rainier Arts Center, a night bringing together two very different but distinctly modern visions of Korean music. Iris opens the evening, followed by Sangjaruā€™s first-ever Seattle performance.

The talharpa is not a gentle instrument. It buzzes, scrapes, drones and somehow feels like it is pulling sound straight out of the earth. This ancient bowed lyre has survived for centuries around the Baltic, especially in Estoniaā€™s coastal and island communities, and at Viljandi Folk Festival, it didnā€™t feel like some artifact being carefully preserved. It felt alive. Young musicians are picking it up, bending it, electrifying it and pushing it into completely new places. The phenomenal educator Liisa Koemets is teaching a new generation.Thatā€™s what I love about Viljandi: tradition isnā€™t trapped behind glass. It gets sweaty, strange, loud and handed forward.

Sangjaruā€™s name combines two Korean words: sangja, meaning ā€œbox,ā€ and jaru, meaning ā€œsack.ā€ A box holds its shape; a sack changes depending on what you put inside, and thatā€™s a pretty great way to understand their music. The Seoul trio takes the sounds and instruments of Korean tradition and stretches them into something unpredictable, mixing in gypsy swing, rock, funk, and improvisation. On September 25, Sangjaru makes its first-ever Seattle appearance at Rainier Arts Center, with an opening set by Seattle-based Korean singer/songwriter Iris Kymm.
This is one of those shows where you may not know exactly what youā€™re walking into, and thatā€™s the point. Take a chance, come hear something you probably havenā€™t heard before, and please buy your tickets early. Itā€™s going to be a special night.

From the archives: Senegalese singer-songwriter Mayoro ā€œYoroā€ Ndiaye performing at The Cutting Room in New York City as part of globalFEST 2011. Growing up in MbackĆ©, Senegal, Yoro would hide away in his fatherā€™s joinery workshop, fashioning his own handmade guitars and learning by spending time with musicians in his hometown. Those early experiments helped shape a sound rooted in Senegalese tradition while remaining distinctly his own. this performance from 15 years ago, a small window into an artist whose music carries the intimacy of where he came from and the long tradition of Senegalese song.
