🐈‍⬛ When Spock didn’t show up for mealtimes last week, we were worried…

We know that colony cats can disappear for days (sometimes weeks) at a time and then return as if nothing happened.

But the “core” cats of certain colonies are usually there every day... They stay close to their home base.

Spock is one of those cats.

Also, we saw him looking sick and not eating for two days before he went missing. Then, he went missing for days. We thought he was a goner… he needed to at least drink to prevent death from dehydration. 😞

But now he’s back!!!!!!🙏🏻🙏🏻😊

He’s thinner, but his eye and nasal discharge looks better than when we last saw him, and his appetite is excellent!

Maybe he just needed to go somewhere for a few days and sleep and rest for most of the day to heal, coming when we weren’t there to at least get some water and stay hydrated.

🙏🏻 A big “Thank You” to our followers who sent prayers and well wishes for his return.

I know we’ll lose him someday, but that day is not today! 🐈‍⬛🖤

🐈‍⬛🐈 Lady Charli and The Prince are getting along very well following their slow introduction in the foster room.

They’re now mingling and sleeping in each other’s spaces, and checking out each other‘s bowls and litter boxes.

In the picture on the left, you can also see that they’ve learned to “team up” to demand their breakfast 😊… it was inevitable 😂

As many of our followers know, we buy or accept donated meat and fish to make cat food for our community cats.

The enhanced nutritional value of the homemade food is wonderful for the health of the cats (in addition to commercial food), and it helps us to stretch our budget dollars.

We are looking for one or two more volunteers in the Sayreville NJ area to help with cooking. Thank you for considering!

“My name is Waldo…🥰

I haven’t always been this relaxed and healthy….handsome yes😻, but for what… all the females in my territory were fixed.😾

So I wasted time and energy, fighting other males, competing for food in multiple locations, and chasing female cats that just weren’t into me.

Now, I stay at one colony with some male buddies (sort of… we’re working on it 😂), a steady food supply, and really no interest in chasing the chicks. It’s all good, and I don’t think the ear tip detracts from my looks, in fact I think it adds some roguish charm… Don’t you?

Oh, and yeah, I’ve always been dirty… I just like to roll around in the dirt and that hasn’t changed.”

Introducing Waldo, our page header kitty!

Waldo was one of the last cats fixed in a group of colonies that were within his pre-neuter territory. He visited multiple feeding locations and we never knew where he was going to show up… Hence the name “Waldo”. 😸

Waldo was neutered in the Spring of 2024. ✂️ We were trying to trap another cat in that colony and he just waltzed into the drop trap. 🪤

Now he stays close to one colony that he calls home, slowly forging relationships with other males in that group. He’s less aggressive, with no recent battle wounds, and now with zero chance of making babies. 👏🏻

Yup…TNR works!! 🐈

Today felt pretty heavy…

Andrea was feeding Captains’s Quarters yesterday and today and Spock didn’t show up for her at mealtime in 2 days….

We’re fearing the worst. We can’t trap him or help him in any way if doesn’t show up.

Then…
The first stop at another group of colonies today….Frank and Simone came out to greet us. Frank being his usual serious all-business self and Simone being goofy…

And at the same colony, the joy of seeing Cadillac Mom and Gandolf…two cats we don’t regularly see.

Seeing these other cats looking great and thriving helps to ease the anxiety we feel when we wonder if we’ve done enough (we all worry that we could have done more), reminds us that we can’t control all the variables, and also distracts us a bit from the worry and heartache we have from thinking that Spock is suffering.

Tomorrow, we’ll continue to look for Spock, and if he doesn’t show, we’ll do the dreaded shelter checks to look for his body. And if we find him deceased, we’ll have closure and the bittersweet satisfaction that he wanted to be close to the home we tried to create for him 🖤🐈‍⬛

We were so happy to see Captain looking good…but now Spock is looking sick again, and not eating for the past 2 days, at least not while we were there…Which means we couldn’t get antibiotic into him. Also, when they’re not eating, it’s hard to get them into a trap.

We didn’t have the funds for dental surgery on him when we last trapped him and brought him in for an upper respiratory infection in January (his gingivitis/dental disease is probably predisposing him to his frequent respiratory infections). We also weren’t sure he would tolerate the recovery hold period…He tends to go on hunger strikes.
We started to see this hunger strike pattern in January of this year and also when we trapped him in June last year for the same problem.

The plan (after his January treatment) was to administer intermittent antibiotic to quiet down his gingivitis. This approach made sense and we were agreeable to try, but it was hard to execute. He’s hard to target feed. Now it looks like he has an upper respiratory infection again…or something else. 😢

Next step is to try to trap him. Not sure what is next after that. All I can say is that we will do our best for him. 😞
