Last week students at North had an open studio with artist Sarah. They were able to explore new mediums and techniques. Students said they liked an open studio style because they could make their own choices with no pressure, which helps with their self confidence and will make them to be better students. While in Minneapolis today I saw them marking a stormdrain. I was so excited I forgot to hit record sooner.

ICYMI: Many people asked about whose responsibility it is to clean stormdrains. Where I live, while the city is responsible for the maintenance and infrastructure, it is on the city and the citizens to keep stormdrains free of debris. People asked whether I cleaned the stormdrain after yesterday’s video. I went back after the storm to clean the debris.

One thing I hope people take away from these videos is that protecting our stormwater is about all of us. And different cities and countries have different rules and regulations. Our cities maintain our stormwater systems, but we all play a role in keeping leaves, litter, and other debris from blocking storm drains—especially before or after a big storm.

Small actions may seem insignificant, but together they can make a difference in helping water flow where it’s supposed to go.

Stewardship Sunday: Small Actions, Lasting Impact

When people hear the word stewardship, they often think it’s about protecting nature. I think it’s bigger than that.

Stewardship is caring for something that has been entrusted to you. Sometimes that’s a river. Sometimes it’s a neighborhood. Sometimes it’s a child who’s discovering they can make a difference.

My hope for Only Rain Down the Drain has never been simply to teach children what belongs in a storm drain. It’s to help them see that caring for the places we live is something all of us can do, one small action at a time.

Because stewardship isn’t about doing everything. It’s about each of us doing our part.

This is one of the reasons why you clean your stormdrain: prevent flooding. In order for only rain to go down the drain, need to make sure they’re clear of debris.
