Malden Anglers

Malden Anglers Malden Anglers' is a fly-fishing club founded in 1947 located in Saugus, Massachusetts just minutes from Boston. Accepting new members !

The clubs three acre trout pond is stocked twice a year with a variety of Brown and Rainbow trout and an occasional "Brookie". Presentation and fly selection are keys to a productive day whether you are dry fly fishing, nymphing or stripping in a streamer. The area offers a chance to match-the-hatch against some pretty selective trout. Club members can also enjoy a spacious clubhouse featuring a c

ozy wood burning stove, clean bathrooms and a large deck over looking the trout pond. Six casting docks provide ample room to practice the perfect back-cast, double-haul or to learn to roll cast. In addition to fishing, fly tiers regularly meet on Monday evenings around 7pm to tie flies, share ideas and techniques and exaggerate their fishing exploits. Club members meet monthly on the fourth Tuesday of the month for a business meeting from September through May. Entertainment includes area guides, fly tying demonstrations or auctions. Some meetings include a barbeque on the deck, pasta supper, corned beef or ham dinners. You can also try your luck at our raffle table to win tackle, books or objects of art.

Inchworms are the larvae of winter moths and have been absent in numbers from the Northshore for a few years. It’s nice to see these terrestrial zip-liners dangling over Patkin pond again. I bumped into a former member in Florida one year and when I told him I was from the club he asked “are the inchworms back?”

Rising temps and warming water mean plenty of dry‑fly opportunities at Patkin Pond. We don’t have many browns in the mix this season, but this one couldn’t resist a caddis tucked in the shade of an overhanging oak tree. He was not thrilled about my trickery, but I’m pretty sure he forgave me quickly once he swam off after a splashy release.

We had an awesome turnout this morning at the Malden Anglers Spring Open House! It was great meeting so many new faces and sharing what our club is all about.

A big shout-out to local author Cathy Ballou Mealey for coming by - we love meeting folks who are excited about fishing, learning, and being part of something fun and welcoming. Bud and Thomas had a great time showing Cathy around the pond and clubhouse.

Huge THANK YOU to all our members and volunteers who made this happen. The place looked fantastic, and the warm welcome everyone gave really made the day special. You all knocked it out of the park! 💪

We’re fired up and can’t wait to get our new members out on the water, tying flies, catching fish, and making new friends.

I got "the seven-segment goods" yesterday from BCFlyguys - Fly Fishing Kamloops. This is the Mighty Mites Pupae Pack and most of them are #16 and #18. They are perfect for my local club. I like the tying style with smaller beads, white gills, and curved-shank hooks.

Twenty Saint Joseph’s fourth‑graders, their chaperones and teachers spent the day with us at Malden Anglers for a field trip that has become a cherished seven‑year tradition. The event was created by Principal Joe Sullivan—an enthusiastic club member whose legacy continues to shape days like this even after his passing in 2024. Students tied custom flies, cast for rising trout, and explored Patkin Pond on a tour with our wildlife and forestry experts. We finished the day with a drizzle and a well‑earned lunch of pizza‑and‑pasta.

We all recognize Ted Turner as a media mogul and billionaire, but he was also an ardent angler. He became an ambassador for the sport—helping elevate fly fishing beyond the catch. He saw it as a tool for conservation, a connection to land stewardship, and a responsibility to protect clean water and native fish.

His resources allowed him to become one of the largest private landowners in the United States, with properties along famous rivers such as the Gallatin, Madison, and Ruby. Many anglers consider his ranches among “the best private trout water in North America.”

Like him or dislike him, his work helped link angling to conservation, education, and long-term stewardship in a way that continues to influence the sport today.

Ted Turner passed away today at the age of 87
