Chef and Malden Angler Tom Trovato christens his new ultralight spinning rod with a double-header of Patkin Pond largemouth bass. With one fish dangling from the line and the other proudly displayed in hand, Tom seems to have figured out how to get twice the action from a single cast.

Whether these bass were granted a pardon and returned to the pond or became the chef's special of the day remains a mystery. What isn't a mystery is the smile on Tom's face. Catching them two at a time is hard to beat! 🎣😄

The graphic highlights the four major aquatic insect groups every trout angler should know — mayflies, caddisflies, stoneflies, and midges. Along with terrestrials, they make up most of a trout’s natural diet and most of what fly tiers imitate.At Patkin Pond, the picture shifts a bit. Stoneflies aren’t part of our local mix, but midges absolutely are — they’re the pond’s year‑round staple. Caddis and mayflies show up too, yet midges do most of the feeding work for our trout. A local whitetail deer grazes near our fishing docks. The weather’s far too warm for trout, but this young buck doesn’t seem bothered. As long as our club’s fly‑tyers don’t look too enviously at his summer coat, he’s content to nibble and wander. If he only knew how many deer‑hair poppers and hoppers his naturally buoyant fur have inspired..

This handsome six-pound largemouth was pulled from Patkin Pond by Danny Donahue, grandson of Malden Angler Dan Donahue of Saugus. These black bass are thriving in Patkin Pond — and some are absolute hogs!

The smaller ones can be tempted with flies and topwater lures, but the big ones demand meatier offerings in deeper water.

With the fall trout stocking not happening until late September or early October, now’s the perfect time to grab your spinning gear or bait caster and chase a trophy bass. The casting docks offer easy access to nearly every corner of the pond, but if you really want to patrol the waters properly, take a boat, canoe, or float tube and get after those lunkers! Dan and Danny are constant companions on the water. Congrats guys on a real trophy.
