A beautiful day for the 2026 Malden Anglers Kids Day!

While the recent heat made the trout a bit sluggish and hard to find, there were plenty of roaming largemouth bass. Kids Day marks the end of the catch-and-release trout season, so artificial lures, worms, and take-home buckets are allowed.

Plenty of fish were caught, snacks were enjoyed, and most importantly—lots of smiles from the kids (and the young at heart). The day included a hot dog lunch and even a fun prize giveaway at the end of the event.

A big thank you to Larry Snook, Kalil Bogdhan, Bud Koor, and John Berg for their time, treasure, and effort. Special thanks as well to Pete Santini and his team at Fishing Finatics for their support in helping make the day such a success.

Big thanks to the Vegella and Pettipas families for their generous donation of fly fishing and tying books to our club library. There are over 150 volumes in our collection.

Like fine wine, some fly patterns never change—and a good technique still works just as well today as it did when it was first cast. These shelves are full of that kind of timeless knowledge, built by anglers who really knew their craft.

Good to know these books will keep getting used and passed along for years to come.

Nothing better than a sunny day on the water!

These moments at Patkin Pond are what Adam’s Parachute is all about—giving young people a chance to step away from life’s struggles and find something steady, peaceful, and real. Through time on the water, they build confidence, connection, and a sense of calm that can be hard to find elsewhere.

Founded by Jim Faust in memory of his son Adam, the organization supports individuals facing the challenges of addiction, recovery, and mental health—reminding all of us that even in the toughest moments, healing and hope are possible.

Special thanks to Malden Anglers: Dino Cuscuna and Michael Smith for being great hosts to a wonderful group.

Trout season ends on Kids Day, June 20th! While members may still fish for trout, the catch‑and‑release requirement is paused for the summer as the water warms. This is also when the bass fishing really turns on — Patkin Pond has loads of small and medium largemouth that love poppers and flies, plus some real bruisers hiding in the weeds.

Another great day on the Deerfield. Malden Anglers President Thomas Lew out with Hilltown Anglers guide Brian Gilbert — a familiar face to the club and one of our past presenters. Brian guides across the Deerfield, Housatonic, Swift, and many other Massachusetts waters. Fly fishing t is his specialty, but lately the species du jour have included; pike, carp, shad and, of course, trout.

June is here, and that means we’ve got less than 3 weeks of prime trout fishing left before Kids Day on June 20. This is the heart of the catch-and-release fly season—cool water, active fish, and some of the best action you’ll see all year. If you’ve been meaning to get out, now’s the time—don’t let these days break off.

Kids Day is one of our best traditions, welcoming Malden Anglers kids, families, and friends for a relaxed, fun day at the pond. Spinning gear and worms are welcome, and trout and bass can be kept—perfect for introducing the next generation to fishing.

It also marks the seasonal shift. After June 20 and until fall stocking, all gear is allowed—spin, lures, worms, and flies—and both bass and trout may be kept. A great stretch ahead for those who enjoy a different pace and style.

But for now, the fly season is still fully on. Make the most of it while it lasts.

Inchworms are the larvae of winter moths and have been absent in numbers from the Northshore for a few years. It’s nice to see these terrestrial zip-liners dangling over Patkin pond again. I bumped into a former member in Florida one year and when I told him I was from the club he asked “are the inchworms back?”

Rising temps and warming water mean plenty of dry‑fly opportunities at Patkin Pond. We don’t have many browns in the mix this season, but this one couldn’t resist a caddis tucked in the shade of an overhanging oak tree. He was not thrilled about my trickery, but I’m pretty sure he forgave me quickly once he swam off after a splashy release.
